Everton target Sylvain Distin to fill defensive gap | Aston Villa - Times Online
Age isn't on his side though so £6m is steep.

Out of all the centre backs we've been linked with, Distin is the one I would prefer.Everton have made an approach for Sylvain Distin, after agreeing a deal to sell Joleon Lescott to Manchester City, but they face competition from Sunderland for the defender. Distin has been valued at about £6 milion by Portsmouth, who turned down Liverpool’s £2.5 million offer this summer.
Sunderland are close to signing John Mensah on loan from Lyons, but want another centre back. Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, made an approach for James Collins, the West Ham United defender, but he believes that he might be able to sign Distin for a modest fee because the player has one year left on his contract and his club need to raise money.
Everton, who hope to complete the signing of Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, the Lokomotiv Moscow winger, have targeted several defenders, including Ryan Shawcross, of Stoke City.
