Everton target Sylvain Distin to fill defensive gap | Aston Villa - Times Online

Everton have made an approach for Sylvain Distin, after agreeing a deal to sell Joleon Lescott to Manchester City, but they face competition from Sunderland for the defender. Distin has been valued at about £6 milion by Portsmouth, who turned down Liverpool’s £2.5 million offer this summer.
Sunderland are close to signing John Mensah on loan from Lyons, but want another centre back. Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, made an approach for James Collins, the West Ham United defender, but he believes that he might be able to sign Distin for a modest fee because the player has one year left on his contract and his club need to raise money.
Everton, who hope to complete the signing of Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, the Lokomotiv Moscow winger, have targeted several defenders, including Ryan Shawcross, of Stoke City.

Out of all the centre backs we've been linked with, Distin is the one I would prefer.

Age isn't on his side though so £6m is steep.

Thoughts?

With his game being based mostly on pace and acceleration he looks like a rather poor investment for me. But he can play as a left back (at least did it in the past), so I am not totally negative regarding him. But the price would have to be much lower than 6m...

Great option, and a good replacement.

He might have a nervous first few months but will be a good replacement for Lescott in the long run. He's dead fit so won't slow down too quick either. He'll keep Heitinga, who I believe were interested in signing, out of the team.

Or £10million for a 22 year old Dave Wheater who could replace Yobo or add competition to Jags and Yobo...or we could sell on for cash?

But £6mill aint hurting the bank like £10mill would and we could boslter other areas of the squad more.....

moyse would not pay 6 million for him at 32 taylor is early 20s and costs round 6 million as would huth or senderos they aree better options just my opinion

I'd take him, he's an experienced player and whilst he's not as quick as he once was he's by no means a slow. In an organized side like ours (usually) I think he'd show he's still a very good player.

He's also 6ft 4 and excellent in the air. We could do alot worse.

That's the tricky thing IMO.

Both of them are 1st team players for their clubs worth £10million+, as is Wheater.

Do you spend that amount on a young defender giving Yobo and Jags a run for their money or maybe leaving them on the bench?

Or do you spend £6mill on Distin who would be fine with (you'd think) getting benched but still giving competition and fill a stop gap, then spending the £4mill over towards someone else?

Im not a massive fan of Distin either. Maybe £6mill could be spent on Senderos? Has potential, is still young, willing to fight for a place?
