Blackburn 0-1 Everton

Mikel Arteta scores the only goal – a injury-time penalty – as Everton made Blackburn pay the penalty for missing two second-half spot-kicks of their own.

Blackburn´s Junior Hoilett saw his penalty saved by Tim Howard before Mauro Formica fired Rovers´ second spot-kick against the post.

Arteta then delivered the killer blow in the 92nd minute after Christopher Samba was adjudged to have climbed on the back of Marouane Fellaini.

The first half was a scrappy affair, with the only real moment to note coming in the 10th minute when David Dunn latched onto Hoilett´s pull-back in the area and after losing his marker hit a low shot that rebounded back off the post.

Blackburn won their first penalty a minute after half-time when Ross Barkley demonstrated some inexperience by leaving a leg trailing, which Formica gladly dived over to ´win´ his sides first penalty but Howard saved Hoilett´s spot-kick.

Despite the miss, Blackburn stepped up the pressure and Howard had to save well again from a Samba header. Martin Olsson fizzed a free-kick over before Goodwillie wasted a good chance to open the scoring.

Mauro Formica´s 77th-minute spot-kick slam against the post after Formica had been fouled by Phil Jagielka.

Rovers were then made to pay for their profligacy as Everton were awarded a spot-kick of their own in injury time when Samba climbed over Fellaini and Arteta made no mistake to a calm finish with virtually the last kick of the game.
