A game second half performance from Everton was not enough to overcome a resilient Chelsea side as the Toffees fall to a 2-1 defeat after extra time in an enthralling cup tie.
A poor mistake from Jan Mucha gave Chelsea an easy lead in the first half, with Salomon Kalou credited with the goal. Chelsea also saw Nicolas Anelka miss a penalty in the first period.
However, the second half belonged to Everton, after Ross Turnbull was dismissed for a foul on Louis Saha. Unfortunately, Leighton Baines missed the resulting penalty, however it was Louis Saha who equalised late on with a bullet header from a Seamus Coleman cross to force extra time.
Unfortunately, Royston Drenthe saw red in the second period of extra time for a second yellow due to a foul on Ryan Bertrand. Chelsea took encouragement, and a rebounded Malouda shot was pounced upon by Daniel Sturridge to give the visitors the win and progression in the League Cup.
