Everton´s desperately disappointing season showed no sign of abating in a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle.
Newcastle stormed into a 2-0 lead inside the opening half hour. Everton gifted the hosts the opener courtesy of a Johnny Heitinga own goal on 12 minutes. A decent cross from the right by Danny Simpson looked bread and butter for Tim Howard to collect, but a mix up resulted in Johnny Heitinga sticking out a out a toe to deflect the ball into his own net.
The lead was doubled on 29 minutes when Ryan Taylor capitliased on a half clearance from Jack Rodwell to strike well in off the bar from 20 yards out.
Everton looked incapable of salvaging anything from the game until the the stroke of half time. Royston Drenthe delivered in a fantastic delivery from a corner to leave Rodwell to head home at the near post to give Everton hope heading into the second half.
But it wasn´t to be, Alan Pardew´s side dug in and strangled the life out of the game in the second half through painstaking timewasting with the only real moment of note for Everton in the second half being denied a blatant penalty when former Blue Dan Gosling handballed a goalbound Louis Saha effort.
FT. Newcastle 2-1 Everton.
