Everton 3-3 Liverpool

Daniel Sturridge´s 89th minute equaliser prevents Everton from earning their first Merseyside derby victory since October 2010.

Roberto Martinez opted to make one change from Everton´s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, as Ross Barkley made his derby debut ahead of Leon Osman.

Liverpool opened the scoring inside five minutes when Coutinho was inexplicably left unmarked from a corner and with time and space, he casually picked his shot to open the scoring. No doubting the bones will be picked out of that lapse at Finch Farm this week.

Thankfully, the Everton lads weren´t as shell shocked as the Goodison faithful and responded immediately and were level just two minutes later. Baines´ set-piece was knocked down by Ross Barkley, and Kevin Mirallas got ahead of Steven Gerrard to agrobatically divert the ball past his Belgian compatriot Simon Mignolet.

Suarez restored Liverpool´s advantage on 19 minutes, courtesy of a perfectly executed free-kick from 25 yards.

The impressive Ross Barkley nearly levelled soon after, seeing his long ranged curling effort well saved by Mignolet, before Mirallas, strolled past Flanagan and unleashed an effort wide.

Mirallas then caused some controversy, when he decided to take “kick racism out of football” literally on Luis Suarez – “perhaps” fortunate to escape with a yellow card.

Leighton Baines was forced to make way early in the second half, failing to ´run off´ an injury he sustained in the first half, replaced by Gerard Deulofeu, who really should have scored with the first chance of the second half. Deulofeu found himself one-on-one with Mignolet but managed only a poor, tame effort straight at the keeper.

But if Deulofeu´s miss was bad – it had nothing on “The Welsh Xavi´s” miss shortly afterwards. Joe Allen really should have put Liverpool 3-1 up. Our words couldn´t possibly do it justice, instead, click here.

Mignolet then frustrated Lukaku with two impressive saves before eventually the Everton striker drew Everton deservedly level, sidefooting home from inside the area in the 72nd minute after a period of sustained pressure from the hosts.

Lukaku looked to have had the final say as he completed his double eight minutes from time, heading home powerfully from a corner, before Sturridge equalised late on.

Both sides then had chances to snatch an injury-time winners, with Suarez and Deulofeu threatening, but the spoils were shared after a pulsating game.
