With not much to play for in the final game of the 2013/14 season Everton came up with the goods. Travelling to the KC stadium is not the most exciting place to go for an away game but those Everton away fans sure did pump some life in to the ground. 5 minutes into the second half both Man City and Everton had gone two-nil up and pretty much secured 3 points, meaning Liverpool didn’t win the title and Everton would get another away win to add to their impressive points tally on the season. The Everton fans sang for almost 90 minutes amongst pyro and wild celebrations when James McCarthy grabbed his first goal for the club. It was a perfect way to end a fantastic first season under our beloved Manager.
Tim Howard – 7
3 shots to deal with, dealt with them all, picked up his 15th clean sheet of the season in what has been an excellent season for Tim.
Seamus Coleman – 6
Once again Coleman caused the opposition so many problems down that right wing, showing tremendous pace and skill. Our double award winning player of the year seemed to be able to roam around as he pleased and had a comfortable 96% pass accuracy with 2 effective clearences.
Sylvain Distin – 8
Distin played extremely well against Hull on Sunday, touched the ball more than any other player on the pitch, (100 touches). 2 aerial duels won, 9 effective clearences, 1 shot blocked and 2 tackles. He even had 2 successful take-ons, must have been learning a thing or two from the absent John Stones.
Phil Jagielka – 6
Jagielka still doesn’t look back to his old self quite yet, but with the World Cup in mind in which he is sure to start at the heart of the England defence you’d expect him to take it easy. 6 effective clearances 12/18 accurate long balls and 1 interception for our captain.
Leighton Baines – 7
Baines didn’t have much to do in this game and was never really exposed, he was tireless throughout the game however. Passing exceptionally well with 96% pass accuracy, 2 crosses and 1 key pass.
James McCarthy – 9 (Man of the Match)
What a player McCarthy has been this season, it was only a matter of time before the Irishman got on the score sheet. He left it late in the the season to slot home his first goal for Everton but he’ll be delighted with it. 2 shots, 2 key passes, 96% pass accuracy(highest on the pitch), 3 tackles, 2 blocked tackles(most on the pitch), 9 accurate long balls.
Gareth Barry – 8
92% pass accuracy, 94 touches, 85 passes (most on the pitch). Do i really need to say anything else, there will be anarchy in Liverpool if this man isn’t signed on for another season.
Leon Osman – 6
Amazingly Osman is the only player in the entire Everton squad to have featured in every single game under Roberto Martinez. He started on the left side and was part of some pretty attractive football throughout the game. 1 assist and 3 key passes (most on the pitch) for Leon.
Steven Naismith – 6
Played his part in the opening goal, receiving Lukaku’s pass before his through ball found McCarthy. He showed glimpses of quality on Saturday with an assist, a through ball and a key pass.
Aiden McGeady – 6
I have been calling for an Aiden McGeady start the past few weeks, although the end product wasn’t entirely there a lot of the time you could see his undeniable talent and skill. Mark my words this kid will be a huge impact player for us next season.
Romelu Lukaku – 7
In what could be Lukaku’s last game in an Everton shirt it was vital for him to have a good game. He managed 3 shots, 2 of them on target, 1 dribble, 1 goal. I was relieved when he was able to score just after half time from a delightful Osman pass. Lukaku is only the fourth Everton player to have 15 league goals in a season, amazingly he has equalled Rooney’s total goal tally for Everton in one season.
Subs
Gerard Deulofeu – 5
Showed incredible acceleration and skill but once again took too long to make up his mind once in the penalty area and the chance went.
Steven Pienaar – 6
Came on for Osman for the final 13 minutes and was his tidy self. No one expected much after such a lengthy lay-off (his last appearance was the 4-1 FA Cup defeat to Arsenal on 8th March).
Lacina Traore – 5
Came on for Lukaku in time-added-on. Had three touches of the ball but unfortunately his one goal-every-game record has now vanished. Poor from him. Will we see him back next season?
Overall Team Rating – 6.91
