Swansea 3-0 Everton

Everton’s disappointing start to the season continued by exiting the League Cup with a 3-0 defeat to Swansea City

It was Everton’s third game in six days and Martinez again rung the changes, opting to make seven changes to the side that lost 3-2 to Crystal Palace.

Luke Garbutt made his first Everton start since August 2012, Bryan Oviedo returned, 241 days after his horrific double leg break at Stevenage. Muhamed Besic made his full debut, and there was also a notable start for Tony Hibbert. Darron Gibson started for the first time in exactly a year after recovering from a serious knee injury.

Swansea took the lead on 28 minutes when Nathan Dyer poked in after excellent work by Jefferson Montero down the left. A goal down to Jefferson Montero’s individual ability as it was Tony Hibbert’s inability to close him down, or do anything, as the Ecuadorian went past the full-back to cross for Dyer to open the scoring.

The second, in the 64th minute, was another defensive howler. Sylvain Distin continued to do himself no favours when he lost his bearings and misjudged Shelvey’s delivery to inadvertently header the ball on to his own bar and Gylfi Sugurdsson slid in to score.

Marvin Emnes’ third came too late to matter, but the manner in which he was allowed to drift inside and shoot only heightened the concern on Everton’s woeful defending as Everton continued to concede goals at an alarming rate – three more at the Liberty Stadium last night made it 17 in seven games.

Next up, Liverpool at Anfield. What’s that saying about the form book going out the window for a derby?…
