Everton shrug off a poor domestic campaign so far to produce a magical performance in the Europa League, with strikes from Coleman and a Lukaku hat-trick.

Arriving in Switzerland to play on the artificial pitch at the Stade de Suisse, Everton lay in 12th-place in the domestic league and many observers expected an uphill task for the Toffees against tricky European opposition.

However, inspired by a dominant Romelu Lukaku on the night, Everton came from an early goal down thanks to a curling effort from Guillaume Hoarau, and subsequently dominated the game.

Lukaku, who had been threatening to net since the first whistle, grabbed the equaliser 24 minutes in after a fantastic cross from Oviedo, before Coleman put the Blues ahead four minutes later after good work from the lively Steven Naismith.

Everton continued to press the advantage and Lukaku grabbed his second of the night before the break after Gareth Barry found him for a close range finish on the counter attack.

The hosts rarely looked like coming back into the game, except for a block on the line from James McCarthy just before the interval. Lukaku completed his hat-trick on a night where he could have had six or seven with a classy chipped finish on 58 minutes.

It was not all good news for Everton, as John Stones saw red for a foul on Hoarau, who subsequently skied a penalty over the bar, as well as Naismith and Oviedo picking up injuries on the night, but it was a composed performance throughout despite the injuries and going down to ten men, and surely an important result that can be built on by Roberto Martinez when the Toffees return to Premier League action.
