Everton Opinion

Bill & the BENNY of the BIG D

He gets that a lot really doesn’t he, Bill does, gets the benefit of MANY big doubts. Sure, he gets a bit of earache & waffle too but, for the most, he gets away with stuff, Bill. He must do I suppose as he’s still there…front row, mint-popping, look of faux-pride on his face & clapping like a NAN at a Daniel O’Donnell ‘happening’.

Bill.

He is what he is…

Except, of course, he isn’t.

The WALTON HALL PARK possibility is officially – shocker, I know – put to bed. No one’s surprised really, least of all the council I suspect. Some will give it a bit of ‘arms in the air’ and have a little rant. Most will just go ‘Mehhh’ or ‘G’wayyyy’ and then get quickly back to oddschecker to see if there’s been a market move for Eddie Howe or not yet. It’s what we do though. We expect these things to go belly-up because as a collective we’ve been conditioned to wallow in a boardroom inspired malaise for so very long now, as consequence we flap about in this odd fug of being told, quite adamantly, that we’re moving on whilst not really going anywhere at all…

I’m not saying that’s our fault of course, you just get used to things dontcha. And we have, we’ve got used to being head-patted & cheek-pinched for being ‘triers’ and ever-presents without ever really shaking the Premiership tree at all. Not like LEICESTER did anyway, they shook it so hard it fell over and conked everyone else on the head. Well done them eh, with their agricultural hoofball & dirty ten-point gap. Disgusting…

And it’s evident, this BRM (Boardroom Malaise), across this site forum and, I suspect, across others also. So used to aiming low have we become that we now feel somehow foolish in aiming high… but I’m happy to feel foolish at the moment because the dynamic has changed, hugely. Even just the simple option of actually AIMING higher is a delight because it feels somehow much more satisfying than aiming for the middle and knowing what you’re gonna get and where – in the grand scheme of things – it is you belong…

I’ve often read and heard fellow BLUES chant a mantra that bubbles along the lines of ‘…yeah, but it’s the hope that kills ya’ innit’.

Yep…it used to and it still did until only recently in fact, like when we turned up for just one half of a semi-final, that kinda thing.

But it shouldn’t be a feeling to fear any more though, this hope business, because there’s enough of it to go round for everyone… I reckon we’ve all got more of it than we’ve ever had before TBH. Or at least we should have. Even via yesterday’s WHP KB there is hope, especially given as merely hours after it noises were made RE two other possible plots for development. In the past the hush-blanket would have fallen and that, people, would have been that for a while, Bill would have again been granted the Benny of the BIG D once the initial rage had subsided because, well, he gets it all the time without us ever really being aware we’ve even given it…

And I blame the BRM for that.

But there is a flipside also as it would seem as some aren’t happy now either, which is baffling to say the least, arguing as they are between the possibles of JOSE, KOEMAN, PELLEGRINI & FDB. Blimey. The very fact those four are in the mix should tell us SOMETHING at least…and, BTW, there really shouldn’t be one of them that you WOULDN’T embrace were they to become ours because at least they’re not coming from – and I say this respectfully – PRESTON or a relegated WIGAN.

And even if it’s not one of the above names, then whoever it is – WHOEVER it is – we need to all step back a bit and hope; we need to give both chance & time to them because – again – EVERYTHING has changed now. In time we will find BILL won’t need the benefit of doubt inadvertently given him again because he won’t be here, this train is destined to leave without him on board and he’ll do very well out of it too and will probably only ever then look back at us from afar, massive blue that he is an’ all…

But, as said, oddly we now find ourselves arguing betwixt about whether or not some trophy-laden managers are suitable for our club given they may not be over keen on youth development, and this is done whilst conveniently  forgetting that the last manager who was embraced during the ‘Season of the 72’ once deemed TITUS BRAMBLE an England shoe-in?!?!?! We are deeming a young, multi-title winning manager as ‘risky’…yet we accepted a relegated boob so egotistical & blinded by his own philosophy that it cost him his job in the end.

Nice man though, as we’re constantly reminded, so not all was lost eh…

Pfff….

Anyway, back to the BENNY of the BIG D, well…genuinely, I think we need to afford that to ourselves for once, we need to give ourselves the benefit of the BIG, deeply engrained doubt and accept that it’s OK to have hope now, that it shouldn’t feel weird or out of place…that it’s ok to worry about the importance of the next appointment because it’s gonna be a biggy in compare to what we are used to…but pleeeeease – Lads & Ladies – please take comfort in the fact that we no longer have to wallow in nor expect mediocrity, there is genuine ambition about us now where for so long there hasn’t been any ambition nor expectancy at all… Granted, it may take time, granted also that whomever the lucky man at the helm may be that they might not be your first choice…but let’s go with it anyway eh, because I know – in fact I’m sure, no doubt at all – that I’m not the only one who thinks this is the start of something HUGE for our football club…
