Everton v Sunderland

Everton’s busy schedule continues and Sunderland are the visitors as the Blues look to end a run of four defeats, without putting the ball in the net in that time.

The Toffees enter the newly branded Carabao Cup in the third round due to European duties.
It’s said every year, but it’s been proved time and time again that the first piece of silverware of the season is most often the easiest, if anything in football is considered easy.

The number of clubs that don’t take the competition seriously, including zero times winners Everton, is monumental, and it baffles football fans around the country.
It may not be the most glamorous trophy, but it’s silverware… something the Toffees have been craving for almost 23 long, painful years.

Relegated last season, Sunderland haven’t got off to life in the Championship like they’d hoped. Simon Grayson’s men are currently 21st.
With just the one win from eight fixtures so far. It’s going to be a long season for the Black Cats…

In what will be an emotional affair due to the clubs’ connections to inspirational young football fan Bradley Lowery, a wonderful gesture from both club’s shirt sponsors SportPesa and Dafabet respectively, they have been kind enough to allow the Bradley Lowery Foundation logo to replace theirs on all shirts for the game on Wednesday night.

Boasting a few former Blues, it’s a return to Goodison Park for James Vaughan, Aidan McGeady, Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo, with loanees Brendan Galloway and Ty Browning having to sit this one out for obvious reasons.

If selected, Jordan Pickford will also be lining up against his former club.

Ronald Koeman has the same squad at his disposal that crashed 4-0 at Manchester United last Sunday… but a cryptic tweet (since deleted) from Jonjoe Kenny and the fact he wasn’t included in the under 23 squad for Monday night’s clash will give Evertonians hope it’s finally time he can show just what he can do.

Other notable absentees from the under 23’s 1-0 win on Monday were Ademola Lookman and Oumar Niasse – read into that what you will.

It’s the first of four back to back home games for Everton, and after a sluggish start to the season, Koeman, and the fans, will hope it is the start of better things to come…

Up the Toffees.
