With a couple of key midfield signings already confirmed, including the exciting prospect of Andre Gomes from Barcelona, the summer transfer window is assuredly in full swing. Even so, it’d be nice to box off a few more key transfers by the start of August.
Now that we’re in the midst of transfer action it seems as good a time as any to take a quick look at some Toffees who have started to impress elsewhere or could do in the upcoming season. So, without further ado, here’s a quick rundown of three players worth keeping an eye on!
It only seems like yesterday that a 16-year-old Wayne Rooney crashed in that unforgettable 30-yard strike off David Seaman’s crossbar. There are few better ways to announce your arrival on the global stage than that. Of course, a lot has changed since then, though given Rooney’s recent performances over in the MLS, you’d have to say it seems the tank isn’t completely empty for the former Everton starlet.
His current team, DC United, currently sit third in the league, and a large part of their success is down to Rooney. His combined 11 goals and six assists have given DC a fighting chance of lifting the championship this year, something they haven’t been able to do for 12 years now. It’s no surprise that the DC United fanbase are already calling him a club legend.
No matter how you look at it, landing a young prospect like Brendan Galloway from Everton on a free transfer is a great deal for newly promoted Luton. Sure, you may say that the 23-year-old defender didn’t quite live up to his potential at Goodison Park; yet there’s every chance that could change over the coming season at Kenilworth Road.
Regular first-team football might just be the order of the day for Galloway, giving him a chance to develop his promise into consistent performances out on the pitch. He’ll also be teaming up with former Everton assistant coach Graeme Jones. It’s a key signing for Luton, giving the team added confidence of not only staying up, but also maintaining their momentum which has seen them achieve back-to-back promotions. This signing, as well as their other transfer business, has clearly had an impact on the latest Championship betting odds for the 2019/20 season, with Luton’s odds of survival jumping up in recent weeks.
The latest reports coming out of Goodison suggest that Ademola Lookman will be completing a permanent move to Red Bull Leipzig over the coming days, with Everton having agreed a £22.5 million fee for the 20-year old winger.
Although his minutes have been limited over the last few seasons, it’s always a shame to lose a promising English talent all the same. Despite missing out on the recent European Championships, his performances for the U-21 national team haven’t been bad by any stretch of the imagination. We can only hope the decision to move him on won’t come back to haunt us in years to come.
So, there we have it: three Toffees who still have the potential to make a big impact away from Goodison. We’ll be keeping an eye on their progress over the course of the new season though, for now, our attention turns back to securing a few more quality signings before the window shuts in August.
