Anthony Gordon “really close” [to a first-team call]

Everton academy graduate, Anthony Gordon is really close to breaking into Everton’s first-team squad, according to Marco Silva.

Silva told evertonfc.com “He is really close [to a first-team call], I will tell you, unfortunately for him maybe it is the position on the pitch where we have most quality, where competition is hardest.

“He can play in the three positions in our attack line, more or less the same profile as Richarlison, who can play left, right, or behind the striker or even alone up front.

“Since we took Anthony to work with the first team every single day, I am always seeing improvements.

“Even in the moments when he does not do all the session with the team, he is always aware of everything, trying to learn every time.

“Even when he stays with one of my staff, doing something individual, he is always trying to improve.

“You can see the results because he has quality.

“He is the player [from the Academy and Under-23s] since I joined Everton who is closest to reaching the first team.

“When I look to him, it is because he has really high quality.

“He changed something.

“His intensity is different, he is working with the first team, he changed something in his way to play in some moments.

“He is doing really well, it is up to him to keep working hard because with his level he will achieve the first team. I don’t have doubts about that.”

“To give chances in these types of moments, we have to be sure.

“We have to try to help the players perform well.

“We might wait for a player to get his chance in the right moment, for him to come in step by step, in a normal way, and not put pressure on him to solve problems.

“We want players in our [current] attack line to take responsibility to be more clinical, it is not fair to put this pressure on Anthony Gordon.

“He is playing well and making a big difference for the Under-23s.

“He just has to keep working that way and the chance will appear for him.”

  1. The manager is right not to throw him into a struggling team.

If we can improve our results then he will be able to put him on the bench and get 15 to 20 minutes at the end of games to help him settle.

We will probably see him on the bench a couple of times first without getting onto the pitch to help him to adjust to life at Premiership level.

How long before someone who watches the youth teams comes in here and tells us he’s nowhere near ready?

….better than saying he needs to go on loan!!

I’m not one for pushing youngsters but I have posted in recent weeks that this lad could be ready to step-up. Key will not be his performances for U23s, but more about how he’s doing in first team training sessions. There is no hiding place there.

I understand Silva saying it’s unfortunate Gordon plays in positions where he has plenty of options, it will be up to the youngster to grab his chance when it inevitably arrives. I suspect he will.

He’ll soon have his own thread on here.

  3. no harm in giving him the odd sub appearance. Richarlison / Bernard will not perform consistenly over the season, certainly in the busy / cold winter months. Walcott is crap and Gordon can deliver the unexpected / score goals.

in the last 7 days weve had lucas digne publicly come in support of Silva , Mina has been told to come and say the same, and now we are hearing that our best prospect is in line for a chance ..

call me cynical, but its almost like the club are trying to paper over the huge cracks in Silva’s management with good news stories

I’m confused do you want to be called Cynical or Frank?
I have to say that I much prefer this new ploy of good news, rather than a new stadium announcement when we Ev it up.

and if you think Silva will be throwing an untried teenager into the first team when he is desperate to save his job then your dafter than me !

i want Gordon to do well, but now is not the time for him to be playing. ease him in gently when the team are playing well
So rather stick with the under performers? There is never a good time in our managers mind, thats what I’ve seen.. But when the team are rubbish seems as good as any.

He also says he won’t put him in and expect him to solve problems, the players who play now need to do that and that he’ll wait until he can introduce him without pressure.

    Seems sensible to me.

like I say, I doubt he’ll even play a single minute for us this season… its just a sound byte to keep us off the silva subject
