It has been a disappointing start to the 2019/20 Premier League campaign for Everton who are at the wrong end of the table in the early stages of the season. Manager Marco Silva is already under pressure to keep his job and with the January transfer window coming up, the board have to decide whether to back their manager with more cash or bring in another to rebuild the squad.
Here are three players who Everton are being linked with in January.
Frenchman Olivier Giroud was linked with a move to the Toffees last summer, however, the World Cup winner ended up staying at Chelsea. Unfortunately for the 33-year-old, he has not been given much football by manager Frank Lampard this season, who has preferred Tammy Abraham in that number nine position. Giroud continues to be a regular for his national team though, where he has scored twice in his last two games in European Champion qualifiers. Chelsea have been on a good run recently, with one of their standout results coming in the Champions League where they beat Lille 2-1, forcing the bookmakers to cut their Champions League betting odds to reach the last 16 into 8/15. Lampard is unlikely to make any changes to his starting XI in the near future so Giroud may have to leave in January if he wants regular football.
Manchester United’s Marcus Rojo was another player who was linked with a move to Goodison Park earlier this summer. That deal just didn’t quite get over the line in time back in August before the deadline. A fresh move for the Argentine could come in January. The versatile defender can play either at centre-half or left-back so he would give the Toffees a number of options. Rojo is clearly very much out of favour at Manchester United as he has featured on just a handful of games for them in all competition this season. At the age of 29, he is an experienced defender that may be able to bring in on loan to bolster the squad.
If reports are correct, Everton could be fighting it out with Arsenal for Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Numez in January. The Spaniard is valued at around £30 million and has already featured for his national team after impressing in La Liga over the last couple of years. Nunez was a key part of the Spain under-21 side which won the European Championship back in the summer. There may be a release clause in Numez’s contract which would make it easier to land the player, as long as he was open to a move to the Premier League. Gunners boss Unai Emery is thought to be a big fan of the youngster, therefore, Everton will need to convince the player that a move to Merseyside is the best choice for him. The Toffees have conceded far too many goals this season so a defender is likely to be the number one priority in the next transfer window.
The results over the next few weeks could determine who it is who will be giving the approval for any incoming players in January.
