Everton forward Tom Cannon is now taking the time to consider his options regarding who he will represent at international level.
The 20-year-old currently plays for Ireland at U21 level but is also eligible to represent England and is now said to be taking the time to ‘reflect’ on his international future.
Indeed, Ireland U21 manager Stephen Kenny has confirmed via the Irish Independent that he has spoken with Cannon’s agent, though the young striker is yet to make a decision.
Stephen Kenny said: “He (Cannon) has a good attitude and is a good lad but I have spoken to his agent subsequently, before the U-21 squad was selected.
‘His agent is Kenny Moyes, and he just said, ‘Let’s get this camp out of the way and we’ll come and meet you and have a chat.
‘Obviously England U-21 have made an approach and he just needed a bit of time to reflect and see what the situation was and wanted to speak to me after the camp, sit down and have a conversation.”
Cannon had a successful loan spell at Preston North End during the second half of last season, and it is possible that the 20-year-old could be a part of Sean Dyche’s plans for Everton this year.
Indeed, in 20 Championship games for the Deepdale club, Cannon found the net on eight occasions, as well as contributing one assist.
Everton are desperate for reinforcements upfront and the academy graduate could now be ready to make the step up to Everton’s senior squad.
There are high hopes for the young forward at Goodison Park and successfully stepping up to Everton’s first team would certainly alleviate some of the pressure on Dyche’s existing options.
Regardless of who Tom Cannon chooses to represent at international level, the young centre-forward must be featuring for Everton next season.
