Report: ‘Fantastic lad’ Tom Davies priced out of move to Championship club

Former Everton midfielder Tom Davies is set to continue his search for a new club after being priced out of a move to Championship side Cardiff City.

The 25-year-old, who Frank Lampard described as a ‘fantastic lad’, is available on a free transfer after turning down a renewed contract with the Toffees earlier this summer.

Indeed, the midfielder left Goodison Park having been at the club since he was 11 years old in search of regular first-team football after operating on the periphery of Everton’s starting XI for a number of years.

However, a move to the Bluebirds appears to be off, as the Welsh club cannot afford the wages of the former Everton midfielder according to BBC Sport.

Davies has previously been linked with a move to Glasgow Rangers and Italian side AC Monza, who recently drew 2-2 with Everton in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Goodison Park.

Back in January, the 25-year-old told The Athletic that while he might ‘love the club and the city’, he had to consider moving for regular minutes on the pitch.

Davies said: “I love the club and the city but ultimately I want to play games, whether that be at Everton or somewhere else. If I’m not going to get that here, it’s something I’m going to have to think about.”

Tom Davies suffered from the instability at Everton

The midfielder, who made 155 Premier League appearances for the Toffees, scoring six goals, was perhaps a victim of Everton’s managerial revolving door since his 2017 debut.

Indeed, in that time, the former Blue played under seven permanent managers, and was often shoehorned into various midfield roles, inhibiting any development.

However, after a promising start to his Everton career, including a memorable goal against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Davies struggled to fulfil his early promise, and a move away from the club suited all parties.
