Worker loses life in Bramley Moore Dock “incident”

A 26 year old man has been killed in a “major incident” at the construction site of Everton’s new Bramley Moore Dock stadium. Emergency services were summoned on Monday afternoon following the incident.

Workers were sent home as police, ambulance and air ambulance services arrived. The man was taken to hospital in Aintree, but pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

A statement from Merseyside Police read: “We can confirm that a man has died following an incident at Bramley Moore Dock this afternoon, Monday 14 August. At around 1pm it was reported that a 26-year-old man had been injured and emergency services attended the scene.

“The man was taken to hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead. His next of kin have been informed. Officers remain at the scene as we continue with the early stages of the investigation alongside the Health and Safety Executive.”

Everton’s official Twitter account commented: “Everyone at Everton Football Club is heartbroken by the news a male worker has died following an incident at the Everton Stadium site at Bramley-Moore Dock. The thoughts and condolences of everyone connected with Everton are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this unimaginably sad time.” They also confirmed lead contractor Laing O’Rourke would be launching an investigation.

Named as Michael Jones, the man’s family described him as “a lifelong blue” who was “happy to be working on the new stadium.” Their statement went on to say

“The family would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support. It is with our greatest sadness that our beloved son, brother uncle and friend Michael has sadly passed away,”

“We want to thank the NHS staff and work colleagues who did their best for Michael. He will be missed beyond words.”

Everyone at Grand Old Team wishes to pass on our condolences to Mr. Jones’ family and friends. RIP.
