Everton forward Lewis Dobbin has shared what manager Sean Dyche said to him before last week’s game against Wolves.
The ‘outstanding’ 20-year-old made his first Premier League start for the Blues last weekend and has said that Sean Dyche told him to ‘continue’ what he has been doing.
Dobbin impressed during pre-season and was introduced as a second half substitute during the 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa, his performance one of the few positives to take from the game.
Handing him his first Premier League start a week later, Dobbin states that Sean Dyche advised him to ‘enjoy it’ before kick-off.
Speaking with the Liverpool Echo, Dobbin said: “The main message from the manager [on Saturday] was to enjoy it and to continue what I have been doing in previous games.
It’s nice to see the manager saying positive things about you, so hopefully I can keep going and stake a claim for myself.
It’s a massive confidence boost and gives you the license to try things and take risks, knowing the manager is not going to judge you from any mistakes. It gives me motivation and makes me even hungrier to keep going.”
Lewis Dobbin impressed in an otherwise disastrous Everton performance
Dobbin’s positivity in possession and directness has been a breath of fresh air in what has been a dreadful start to the season.
Having impressed during his loan spell at Derby County last season, the 20-year-old had a productive pre-season under Dyche and seems to be in his plans for the season.
No doubt the academy graduate is raw and has a lot to learn, but if we can be patient with him, he’s a talented young player who can contribute to this Everton side.
Indeed, the young forward could get another chance to catch Sean Dyche’s eye this evening as Everton travel to Doncaster Rovers for a Second Round League Cup tie.
