‘Every confidence’: Ashley Young insists Everton can turn season around

Everton defender Ashley Young is convinced that the Toffees can turn their season around, though chances created must be turned into goals.

The 38-year-old who joined the Blues as a free agent in the summer says he has ‘every confidence’ that goals will come, but it is the responsibility of the whole team, not just the centre-forwards.

Speaking via the Liverpool Echo, the versatile defender said: “You look at the chances we have been creating in the games, and on different days it would be a different story.

When you are creating those chances, it is down to everyone in the team, not just the forwards, to get the goals.

I have got every confidence in the team and the squad that we can go and score goals. It is coming.

There are plenty of games and plenty of points to play for. If we don’t take the positives out of the games, creating chances like we have done. On different days, we would have more points on the board.”

Fighting words from Ashley Young must now be implemented on the pitch

Everton created a plethora of chances against Fulham and Wolves though failed to convert any of them and ultimately lost both games.

However, Sean Dyche’s side have since had a 4-0 demolishing by Aston Villa and a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in what was perhaps Everton’s most toothless performance of the season to date.

Indeed, Everton’s only Premier League goals so far this season came during the 2-2 draw at Bramall Lane where the Blues earned their first point of the campaign.

Had £26m forward Beto been recruited earlier in the summer, results against Fulham and Wolves could have been different, yet the club knew a striker was a must and still waited until after the season had started to sign one.

However, as Young states, it is indeed the responsibility of the whole team to contribute goals, and with the tallest squad in the Premier League, more must be made of set pieces – and taking the 38-year-old off corner duty would be a good start.
