‘I’ll relish this’: Dominic Calvert-Lewin admits it has been a tough start to the season after win at Brentford

Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has stated that it has been a tough start to the season, but admitted he loved hearing the travelling fans cheering him after yesterday’s win.

The Blues recorded a long overdue victory with a 3-1 win over Brentford and 26-year-old Calvert-Lewin put in a superb cameo in the second half.

Having taken an early lead through Abdoulaye Doucoure, Everton were pegged back and went into half-time level before a towering James Tarkowski header put Sean Dyche’s side back in control.

The £1.5m Calvert-Lewin replaced the £26m signing Beto, and didn’t take long to make an impact, finishing coolly after some brilliant work by James Garner.

Indeed, the England international was clearly elated to score his first goal of the campaign, and admitted he will ‘relish’ hearing the travelling fans cheer him, admitting his disappointment that he was booed off by a section at Villa Park last month.

Speaking with Sky Sports at full-time, DCL said: “You can see the emotion at the end with the lads and the fans.

It’s been a tough start to the season. It’s been frustrating personally to not be involved as much as I would have liked.

Football is a funny old game. When I came off against Aston Villa, my own fans booed me off. Today, they cheered me. I’ll relish this and take the rest with a pinch of salt.”

Calvert-Lewin had to withdraw through injury during last month’s defeat to Aston Villa after a clash with keeper Emiliano Martinez left him with a fractured cheekbone.

The 26-year-old forward is a class act both on and off the pitch and showed yesterday against Brentford his importance to this team.

While his absence from the squad through injury has been immensely frustrating at times, it is clear how much playing for Everton means to him.

Getting off the mark with his first goal of the season will be an enormous boost, hopefully there’s plenty more to come.
