‘Barely ever’: Arnaut Danjuma says he is not playing in his preferred role at the Toffees

Everton winger Arnaut Danjuma has revealed that Sean Dyche has not been playing him in his preferred position so far this season.

The Toffees signed the Dutch international on a season-long loan from La Liga side Villarreal during the summer.

The 26-year-old has made nine appearances in all competitions and scored two goals but has predominantly been used as a right-winger by Dyche.

However, the attacker has said that he has ‘barely ever’ played on the right during his career, though admitted that he is always ‘trying to embrace new challenges’.

Speaking with Astro SuperSport, Danjuma said: “I’d describe myself as a left-winger. I’ve played in so many positions, and I’ve had good spells in the different positions as well.

At Villarreal we played 4-4-2 and I played as one of the two strikers. When I played at Bournemouth I had a very good season, and I played as a left winger in a 4-3-3.

I’ve played for Everton a couple of times now and I’ve played on the right side, where to be honest with you, I’ve barely ever played in my career, but again, I’m always trying to embrace new challenges and show that I’m there when the team needs me.”

Danjuma unlikely to shine if played out of position

Arnaut Danjuma scored 16 goals for Villarreal from the left-wing and while we can utilise his versatility, surely it would be most beneficial to play the Dutchman where he is most effective.

A consistent problem for the Toffees in recent seasons has been the necessity to play certain individuals out of their preferred position, given the limitations within the squad.

However, Everton have a few options in attack and competition for places on the wings, with the likes of Jack Harrison joining on loan from Leeds United, and Dwight McNeil performing consistently.

Danjuma clearly has ability and is an attacking threat, and while his versatility can be an asset, playing the 26-year-old in his preferred role will surely get the best out of him.
