Alan Shearer has named two Everton players, Onana and Branthwaite, in his Premier League Team of the Week following Sunday’s 1-0 win over West Ham United.
Sean Dyche’s side returned to Merseyside with a 1-0 victory at the London Stadium after a superb team performance.
However, Shearer states that two Everton players in particular stood out with the ‘magnificent’ Jarrad Branthwaite named alongside ‘powerhouse’ Amadou Onana.
Jarrad Branthwaite once again displayed composure beyond his years at the back and we’ll soon run out of superlatives to describe the 21-year-old.
The young defender’s interception early in the second half started the attack which led to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s winning strike, exemplifying his importance to this Everton side.
Indeed, Shearer was equally as impressed and said of the centre-back: “(He was) Magnificent at the back. Nothing got past him against West Ham.”
Onana and Branthwaite impressed more than just Shearer
Amadou Onana shared the plaudits after his ‘powerhouse’ display, with the 22-year-old putting in a mature and demanding performance.
The £33m midfielder was combative throughout the tie and dominated in the heart of the pitch, dictating the play and showing the leadership qualities that seem to be growing within the Belgian.
Named alongside Branthwaite in Shearer’s Team of the Week, the former Newcastle forward said of Onana: “A real powerhouse performance. He led by example at the heart of Everton’s midfield.”
The win put the Toffees five points clear of the bottom three and just three points adrift of the top half of the table, emphasizing the significance of the victory.
Indeed, six points out of a possible nine in the month of October should hopefully allow Sean Dyche’s side to gain some momentum, especially with the visit of Burnley tomorrow evening in the League Cup Round of 16 tie followed by a tough Premier League game against Brighton.
