Everton manager Sean Dyche has been dismissed just hours before the club’s FA Cup clash against Peterborough tonight.
Sean Dyche took charge as Everton’s manager on January 30, 2023, succeeding Frank Lampard. At the time of his appointment, the club was in a perilous position, sitting 19th in the Premier League table with just 15 points from 20 matches—the lowest tally at that stage in Everton’s history under the modern three-points-per-win system.
Dyche would go on to guide Everton to Premier League safety in 2023/24, with a crucial 1-0 win against AFC Bournemouth on the final day, ensuring the club maintained its top-flight status.
Financial constraints and a points deduction for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules followed in the 2023/24 season. Despite these significant setbacks—and following two successive seasons of relying on final-day victories to secure survival—Everton demonstrated marked progress in 23/24, underpinned by a significant defensive improvement. The team recorded 13 clean sheets, the joint-second highest in the league alongside champions Manchester City. This newfound resilience helped Everton amass 48 points, matching 11th-placed Brighton and positioning the club closer to European qualification than relegation. However, the points deduction ultimately reduced them to a 15th-place finish.
A summer of uncertainty followed with a wantaway owner and Everton struggled to carry their momentum from the end of the 2023/24 season into 2024/25. Midway through the campaign, with the team languishing in 16th place after securing only three wins and eight draws from 19 matches, the club’s new owners, The Friedkin Group, have decided to take decisive action.
