How is it meaningless

We haven't won anything in almost 3 decades. We are in no position to look down on any competition.

Is it any wonder we are such losers with that sort of mentality
Your spot on with this, a small number fans walked out in the 27th minute last season and there was a reason why it was 27, but now 12 months later sone are saying its perfectly fine to not try and win things.

I think Lampards reasoning is fair.

Long season with a lot of games, eventually the likelihood is that some of these squad players will need to play.

Add to that that a lot of them players, as he said, are players with a lot of experience and appearances. They should be able to, and need to be able to be called upon if needed for the first team.

He has also used this to prove a point that the squad just ain't good enough and the shitheads from last season need turfing.

That team on paper is good enough to beat Bournemouths reserves. Thankfully we won't be seeing Michael Keane anytime again soon.
Each and every one of those players tonight had a last chance to impress, and maybe challenge for a place in the starting line up, and each one failed.

Much learned for our manager tonight.
