Changes Coming To GOT

Short Version

The UK government is forcing us to remove the Current Affairs forum, and NSFW type threads. Maybe also user to user private messaging.

Google 'Online Safety Act' if interested.

Long Rambling Version;

We're of course, an Everton Forum.

But in our 18+ years (not one of you wished the forum a happy birthday last week ffs), we've become a community beyond Everton.

Since 2017, we've sought to best accomodate 'current affairs' discussion in it's own sub forum - out the way, with a 'enter at own risk'/hands off moderation policy.

It's worked well.

Or as well as it could have done. Online. Politics.

However, the Online Safety Act (OSA) in the UK comes into effect on March 17, 2025. Someone much more articulate than I provides some commentary here. Also some more background info and it's implications here.

The implications of the act has already caused forums in their entirety to close, others have closed the ability to post. Some discussion on here of this act from December.

Moderating a Everton forum is challenging enough - we don't have the resource, ability, diplomacy to moderate politics in a way that would make us compliant with the act. Even if we did, I don't think we'd have the inclination to. Nor be prepared to accept the personal liability to do so.

Sadly then, we need to close the Current Affairs forum from 1st March.

We'll also need to close 'Not Safe For Work' threads, like 'The Fit Birds' thread.

There's a chance we may also need to disable user to user private messaging but I'm awaiting clarification on that.

But fear not. We can still fume about Everton.

It's a shame but an entirely understandable move.

I cant help think though that the Ale House forum will see posters passing topical comment.

You'd literally have to make GOT a single Everton Only forum to shut the politics down completely.

I remember the Bluekipper forum's demise (a thankful demise in the end) when it was a free for all on just about all subjects - it was like a western movie saloon bar fight scene ad nauseam. A rancid atmosphere for months and months before it bit the dust.

In the time of Covid, when it first started hitting the fan, different Govt responses around the world etc I found this forum a good source of what was really happening. In NZ for example I thought the Govt was trying to dictate all news/reporting output and put themselves as the single source of truth. Yes, one could take some posts with a pinch of salt but there were so many genuine honest posts that it was good to help form a balanced opinion.

I imagine if a covid scenario came about again, the option to discuss on here will be gone. If that's the case then it's truly a sad day for freedom of speech.

I've actually come around to the idea. The amount of people who just post absolutely insane tweets as their opinion is shocking. I'll take the pain of only discussing stuff down the pub (unless Starmer makes that illegal) if it means harmful and misleading information is deprived oxygen.
This bill was introduced and passed under a Conservative Government. Unless you are talking about Starmer making pubs illegal......

It was a tongue in cheek remark about Starmer banning controversial conversations in pubs (according to GB news)

Seriously though, as someone who looks on a lot of other football forums, I can guarantee the vast majority will not be bothered at all by any changes in the law and will just continue as they are.

Would hosting the site outside the UK make any difference?

Here's a complete random selection mate;

... Most will likely play catch up after next month.

I'd be surprised at any credible platform (it's not just forums), neglect it entirely.

How does it define “based in the UK?”
Owned or hosted? Could you host it in Europe for instance?

The act has extraterritorial reach, meaning it can apply to websites and online services based outside the UK if they have a significant number of UK users or are accessible by UK users and pose a risk of harm.

How that works in reality - god knows.

I've read forum owners say they'll be using the likes of Cloudflare to deny UK users rather than bother to comply.
