He is definitely more tactically aware than allan for sure...problem is that his attitude stinks and wouldn't be fit at least half the season...hopefully that little cameo would have helped us convince anybody to buy him/pay his wages...

Benitez is playing 4231 with no defensive midfielder in either of the 2 midfield places.

Gbamin has the potential to nail down that defensive midfield spot this season IF ONLY he can stay fit. He looks physically brilliant, tall, muscley and athletic. He's had a great pre-season and has been allowed to ease his way back to fitness. If he can't stay fit now, or has another setback, it really needs to be time to pay off his contract. I really hope he can come good for us. Gbamin alongside Allan for me all day long - Allan to roam and Gbamin to sit. Rodriguez on the right and. Richarlison on the left. Seriously, it would be an outrage if that midfield couldn't cause any team problems.
Problem is, James is always one game away from being out for a month, Richarlison won't be back for another month, and Gbamin has it all the prove. Therein is the issue! We have nothing in reserve, Doucouré aside who is pretty average.

Weve not seen Gbamin in the premier league in either role to be able to say if hes best as a centre or defensive midfielder.
Davies was used at a defensive midfielder last season.
Someone like Gana is more of a ball winner while Neves at Wolves could be an 'anchor' and deep playmaker.
The funny thing is that playing 4231 and using these (rubbish) wingers in Townsend and Gray there needs to be someone to pass them the ball from midfield...

The midfielders we have would be suited to a 3 man midfield to play 433. If we want to play 4231 then we need new players.

I genuinely don't know. In theory it is Gomes, but he's finished. Davies can't play in there for us, he's not physically strong enough or tactically clever enough. Gueye and Barry would also take the ball from the centreback under pressure, but Davies doesn't do this.

Davies does take the ball from the centre backs but he’s a liability at it. Dwells on it, turns over possession in dangerous positions far too often. Hoped he would learn but was still doing it far too often last season.
