What we can give these players is 1st team footy if they instantly go in to the team, no longer fringe players.

A lot of these players won’t want to leave Chelsea or Spurs. We eventually keep offering them more until they come for the money and guaranteed starts. We end up with the likes of Schneiderlin who just didn’t ever want to be here. We need players who are Everton as a huge opportunity for them, not as a decent pay day for a few years.

It's a huge worry, but we have been in the awful cycle of being so unattractive to join that we're left with those crap, overpaid players because the ones who can be signed at good value have better propositions in front of them.

So, even if we're able to agree a fee with their club they will ultimately decide to join a club on the up rather than a club who narrowly avoided relegation last season and realistically are years away from even challenging the top six if we're lucky.

Whereas we were looking at catching Arsenal and Spurs not that far ago, we've allowed ourselves to drop to even a few sessions behind the likes of Leicester, West Ham, Wolves and probably, soon, Newcastle.

This is true but then where do you go for players. If you have quality and experience you’ll be in one of those top teams, if you have quality then you’d aim higher than is at the moment.

I really want us to go back to basics of building a side rather than buying cast offs from teams above us.

If we can get good young hungry players to join us and develop together maybe flogging one or two now and then to generate cash that would be great. Throw in some experience like your Tarkowski’ Sam’s Begovic’s and we should do ok.

Completely agree with this. A few experienced signings like Tarkowski are fine but we really need to sign some players that are ready to make an impression in their careers, not older Prem players who are just happy to stay in the Prem

Im not saying never shop at the top teams. If there’s a player who is keen to play for us and is coming as he genuinely wants to play some football and win stuff for us then great, let’s do a deal and buy him. Im just always wary of swap deals, feels like we get the cast offs they don’t want who don’t particularly want to be here and they get our best assets.

Yup big difference getting an up and coming player like Gallagher as part of the deal vs someone like Moura.

At the moment I think our transfer strategy is in two parts.
The first is cheap or free signings of players ready to immediately step into the team where there is little transfer outlay. Wges may be a bit higher than we would like but that is more than offset by the saving on a transfer fee. Eriksen would be another obvious signing but there is probably too much competition for him .

The second part is the more interesting part where we sign young players in the 18-22 ish age bracket from foreign leagues or the lower leagues in England.
Lesser transfer fees, not enormous wages and the potential that we can develop them into better players.

We are not in the market now to sign expensive, established players on high wages. That strategy has in no small part landed us in the trouble we are in.

Arsenal have a plethora of attacking midfielders - Martinelli, ESR, Saka, Odengarrd, Viera, Pepe - now in for Raphina. Wonder is there any low hanging fruit there, would love ESR or Martinelli on loan, unlikely proabably.
