2023/24 Kevin Thelwell

True Brands let players go like Robertson for 1 million, a great left back .... now at Fulham managed by the same manager who was told to sell him = Marco Silva .....
Dyche sold Simms, a wonder kid from City who knew how to score goals .....
Simms was never considered a wonder kid despite scoring regularly at youth levels

What's Thelwell's take on Dyche's performance / Everton's performance since mid-December? As the DoF.

Is there anything fit & proper at the club or is Thelwell just doing his job in terms of selling/buying players? I feel Dyche is getting an easy ride. So in turn the players are getting an easy ride. Just like the whole club has been devoid of any leadership and accountability for years never mind months. If there's no one at the top to turn the screw and drive the club then this is what we are left with. A rudderless club it's beginning to look like a lost cause. It looks like that on the pitch for sure.

The decision to invest a significant amount of our small budget on Chermiti, has to go down as a truly baffling decision.

Why on earth did they think we were in a position to spend 10m plus on a development player. It's not the player's fault at all and he could turn out a good player, but it was a totally bizarre piece of business given the circumstances.

Ultimately we won't go anywhere other than down unless the scouting and recruitment dramatically improves.

Staggering how bad the recruitment is.
We also don't improve players once we sign them. Clearly something is going wrong on the coaching side as well.

It's not just recruitment. It's what we do once we sign players with potential. We are failing in both aspects.

He said this in February :

“The scale of the progress made under Sean’s management is clear when you reflect that, at this same point of the 2022/23 campaign, we had 18 points with a goal difference of minus 18. A year on and we’ve doubled the number of victories, scored 10 more goals, and conceded four fewer. The fact our 26 goals have been netted by 15 different players also demonstrates that collective effort and shared responsibility.

Whilst we didn’t add new faces, we believe we have a strong and robust squad capable of dealing with the challenges in the second half of the season. We have strength in depth in key areas, supplemented by several players capable of fulfilling roles in different positions.”

I raised this about a month ago, surely the job of a DOF is to liaise w first team manager over tactics, style of play. We can all see that repeatedly serving up the same dross was not working but not a peep from Thelwell.

Needs to go at the end of the season along with many others in my opinion. There is no pace or guile in this team at all. I know he’s up against it but you have to look at what he’s actually brought in. Some of the money he did spend has mostly been on duds imho.
