I do get the aversion to older players, but if they are on a free, and have another good 3 or 4 years left in them, they can be great signings. The likes of Gareth Barry and Gueye show that. It’s when you pay 25 million pound for the likes of an aging Allan that it becomes highly problematic.

Everton ready to seal free Norgaard transfer
Norgaard is attracting interest from the Merseyside outfit, with the midfielder set to be a free agent next summer, according to TBR Football.

A free agent next summer, not this one, as Brentford have an option to extend to 2026. So we’d have to offer at least some cash for someone that turns 31 in a few days time, if we do actually want him.

Gana at 35 has still been our best midfielder this season. I’d offer him another 12 months in a heartbeat.
Yes I agree, was more about we should be targa first choice midfielder and if play him with gana next season, but gana will need breaks and there’s injuries as well. I wouldn’t be buying another Tim, or a Josh brownhill who will be 4th choice every week

If you're letting the manager sign off on the DoF, you're basically giving the manager control over signings.
A DOF's job is to identify players that fit the managers system - would Moyes have signed Alcaraz without Thelwell? If we want success buying cast offs from other PL clubs isn't going to work. We need to be looking abroad for young players, not 30+ players from West Ham.

No to Mangala for me at that price. Garner is a better player than him. He was tidy on the ball but can’t get round the pitch. For 30 mill there’s better central midfielders out there and we need pace in that part of the pitch.
I hope and think we'll go back in for Mangy on loan and take the risk of paying him and him coming back as good as he was before the injury knowing that there is no guarantee of it. Should work out for all parties quite nicely, and then put in an obligation to buy based on conditions.

A lot of positivity around the club regarding the summer, can any of the money people tell me, if we spend big this summer, will that likely mean we won’t spend as much in the following years?

I'm not sure what you think my opinion is of Thelwell, Moyes or the role of a DoF - but that's immaterial.

If you're saying Moyes gets to approve the DoF, then that means Moyes gets a pliant DoF that will accept the signings he wants the club to make.

The Director of Football - if that's the model we're going with and we wish to do so seriously - ought to have the chief input on who the manager is. Not vice-versa.

we have owners now who will fight for us!

spend then spend more!
That sort of thinking got us into the mess we`ve been in the last few years. The big difference now is that we have a new stadium that will boost match day revenue and be able to generate revenue from other events. We already have a rugby league game booked in, and hopefully we`ll be hearing more non football events that will bring in the cash that will allow us to build a strong squad over the next few seasons.

Honestly, I agree with you 100%, Manager-heavy influenced recruitment simply does not work in the modern game, but a DOF having total control over recruitment from top to bottom isn’t going to happen while Moyes is manager.

There have been plenty of murmurs about Moyes possibly having more influence over recruitment (which he shouldn’t). If that’s the case, do you scrap the DOF altogether?

My point is even if Moyes has a say on signings, having a DOF is still better than not having one at all.
