2024/25 Abdoulaye Doucoure

…..I noticed how much defensive cover he was giving in the first 20mins of that 2nd half. Not as obvious as Gueye, Doucoure gets goal side of the opposition and mainly gets in the way, he must be a nuisance to play against and that’s why he plays.

We know him well by now, nothing has changed, nothing will change. Looking like he won’t be here next season, he’ll leave us easier to attack but allow us more quality in possession.

It is what it is.

We must be the only team currently in world football to play a number 10 because he “gets in the way”.

….100%, Mike, that’s exactly the point. It’s almost like he plays in two positions, one when we have the ball and the other without. Crazy, but that’s why he plays.

You have technically outstanding players like James Rodriguez playing no 10 who offer little out of possession but are very effective with it and you have Doucoure who is polar opposite.

Doucoure has been vital these past few seasons because he makes us harder to beat but there’s no doubt he also makes us less effective in the top third. The big challenge is addressing that balance in the summer, so much work for Moyes and his team.

He's one of the main reasons we've been fighting relegation for years. When one of your key players struggles to kick the ball you're never going to do particularly well.

….or he’s one of the main reasons we’ve avoided relegation. All of us would prefer better quality across the squad but when you lack that you need to become hard to beat and Doucoure certainly helps with that regard.

….i like that ‘symptom and cure’ analogy. In respect of your last point, I think we gained 20 points from games he scored in last season, so maybe a little unfair.
Oh for sure, his goals have been massive, but his generally play is terrible. His passing has and does go backwards. When you need to get some control in a game he isn't the player we need.

We need to move on from players like this really.

Made 5 tackles yesterday, the most by any player.

Unfortunately he proceeded to give the ball straight back to Liverpool after doing so with the 3rd worst passing accuracy on the pitch. Which kind of negates the point of him winning it back.

Hopefully that’s the last we see of him as a starter. It was the last away game against a strong side, that for the occasion it was vital not to lose (derby, not actual needing a result) and with limited attacking options. Hopefully come arsenal mcneil is back in the squad

There’s no need for him to start now. he’s not been offered a new deal on his current terms so in all likelihood he’s off to Saudi to get his last big contract.

I understood why he would play away from home against them, but the remaining fixtures we need to be trying to establish what we’ll do next year, and give players like Alcaraz, Iroegbunam, N’Diaye etc time and opportunity in that number 10 position
