Is Premier League Boring?

Yes it is.

Then again so is every big league in Europe now.

A handful of teams can win the league and it’s all been cemented by the Champions League money / financial “fair play”.

Further compounded by these financial rules in the Premier League and the fact Chelsea can circumvent the rules for a couple of years until they get paid a fortune to play in an end of season club World Cup made by FIFA to keep the scab clubs across Europe happy.

I think a lot of it has to do with scouts/managers now preferring players with tactical nous and athleticism, over outright football ability (I’m looking at you Abdoulaye).

And you end up with players like Foden and Grealish, who in any other generation would be exciting mavericks, having their wings clipped for the greater good of the team.

I’m sure it’s not just the premier league this is happening in either.

The game's not boring. It's still a wonderful game despite VAR and all the diving etc.
It's the attitude of the media that's become boring in its predictability and hyperbole.
Nah, all the excitement and wonder has been coached out of.players now. Every game is a carbon copy of the last.

Can't remember the last time I saw a genuine "wow" goal (maybe garnacho's overhead against us in the last 3 or 4 years).

Some nonsense in here tbh. Not competitive? How about PSG winning the league every year or Juventus recently knocking out 9 consecutive titles?
How about the duopoly of Spain or Scotland? The complete dominance of just 3 clubs in Holland and Portugal.

I think any of the top 8 teams in the league right now are capable of a title challenge next season if they nail their summer recruitment.

Some of you sound like you just don’t like football - I’ve seen some great displays by Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton, Fulham and loads of others outside the ‘elite’ this season.

The ‘big six’ are a bit worse this year but the middle teams are a bit better - that’s a good thing in my book.

Yes, but football in general is on the decline. The mavericks of the game are being coached out in favour of the statistical perfect player. We still get great goals and great moments of play but they are fewer and farther apart. I remember seeing a stat that said shots from outside the box were on the dramatic decline cause XG is much better inside the box, so kids are getting coached to not shoot till in the box. Statistically its the correct thing to do, but from a viewing standpoint it ruins the uncertainty around the box.

hmm, I could say the same about La Liga, Valencia was the last team in 2004 to win la liga that wasn‘t the big 3. Bundesliga, Ligue 1 have the same problem basically. Serie A also.

The PL is likely to get 5 cl spots, so this battle is really exciting as boring the champion and relegation battle is.

Really hope Forest can do it, but it shows that a underdog can still do it, also with a type of football that doesn‘t really fit a usual CL team, but suits the team.

Yes, we are going through the most boring period since it began. The amount of top defenders and strikers are at an all time low, the few about now are top class but the quantity is not there, mainly due to the way teams play now.
Considering City have been the best team around for a while, they are the team I watch the least, boring to watch personally. A million passes left and right and stunted the likes of Grealish, and I would love to see what Foden could have been, without the robotic play.

The fact that this very average RS team have only lost twice all season tells you all you need to know about the lack of quality in the league

Add in that most teams try to copy City's retain possession at all costs approach with umpteen passes going nowhere and that you pretty much know who is going to be top 4 and be relegated before the season starts , then yes I'd say that the PL is boring.

Edit ....I forgot bloody VAR which takes any enjoyment and spontinaity out of the game as well.

Yes. The obscene amounts of money paid for getting to the Champions League have created a gap between the have's and the have nots that gets bigger every year. The less places a domestic league gets in the CL, the worse it is. For Example, Celtic will probably get £30 million for qualifying and the next best (Rangers?) will get about £2 mill from TV money. There's no way they will ever be able to compete. Many leagues are going/have gone that way and footy, as a competition, is all but over in those leagues (and in ours).

yeah, definitely.
It's got far more jeopardy than American Pro sports.
It's also a good time to go to the pub with friends and far cheaper than attending live US sports.
In fairness, NBCs coverage has been great, the panels, hosts, fan zones.
Thing is, I really think in England, all that stuff has gotten much worse.
I'm staggered by the price of sporting events in the States now. I used to cross the Atlantic a couple of times a year in my old job and I'd always try and check out the hockey/basketball/baseball (I can't get on with what the Yanks call "football", soz American blues but it's the most boring game on the planet). It was pretty easy to get tickets and they were similar in price to a PL game, I saw loads of good sport. Fast forward 15 years and I visit the States again with work and without the family in tow and figure I'll try and see the basketball. The only tickets I could get were in the rafters and they were insanely expensive, you then hear about the price of beers and nachos and whatnot and I decided I'd just head to the nearest dive bar instead. I don't know how ordinary working people in America can afford to go to the game.

Soon to be an even bigger financial gulf with the world club cup giving 96 million to the winners

They cant, at least not around here.
Most of the people I know (or how I go if I do) is families who've had season tickets for ages and will give/sell me a ticket.
You can still get baseball tickets day of fairly cheap because they play a million games a season. I won't pay in to fenway out of principle any more.
Occasionally I'll go out to Worchester to see their AAA team.
USL is introducing pro/rel and there's a new team in Portland Maine I might check out
But yea, Pats, Bruins, Celtics cost an absolute fortune especially if you have kids.
I still persist with the Revs about once or twice a season but christ it's grim.
I went to the Everton Arsenal game a few seasons ago but dont think I'm going to bother going to Atlanta this season. $75 for a friendly is nuts.
Unfortunately, BMD will head that way in a few seasons.
Get everyone in and comfy then start jacking up the prices.
