The Now-Irrelevant 2024/25 Relegation Battle (Without Everton!)

A big problem, and also to make the mental switch, you are getting points in 75% of the games in the championship to 25% in the PL. First of all, it's about finding an idea without the ball, and making your team effective with the low use of ball.

Playing like for example Southampton is a joy for teams that come with a much better quality and just wait to expose the way. I believe they scored 23 goals while conceding 20 goals from individual mistakes.

I think that's what Brentford and Fulham did much better for example and why they became mid-table teams for several seasons now with the same manager that got promoted.

….spot on, Matey.

I’m not writing off McKenna as a manager, it’s difficult to go up 2 divisions and then stay up.

It may have done Ipswich a favour playing a more pragmatic style - but not necessarily his career. Bayern Munich wouldn’t come calling for Dyche over Kompany would they.

I think most clubs would have binned Kompany tho at one stage during the season. 4 points after 13 games (1 win), 13 points after 27 games (3 wins) usually gets you sacked.

Can't see someone like Russell Martin would get appointed for a top club, who basically tried the same with a even worse squad.

…I wouldn’t write him off either but he needs to be taking plenty of lessons learned for Ipswich to succeed if he brings them back up.

Comparing their financial possiblities, I would say Luton did the best job of all 6 promoted teams in the prem the last 2 seasons.

Eventually, they ended up in the relegation battle with the same manager a league below. Will be interesting to see whether they got the same path with McKenna.

I’d agree re the prem season. TBH though they were only really given hope by a season adjusted by 3 points deductions.

What’s gone on their since relegation is scary though and they’re looking certs for League one now

I've done the big draw specialists thing elsewhere so this is a slightly different look.

Outside of the bottom three, who has the fewest wins this season?

Everton - 8 wins all season, 5 of them under Moyes in just over 3 months (14 games)

Obviously we've been safe for quite some time now, but I'd love the team to prove me wrong from what I posted below, which was directly after our 0-4 home defeat Spurs second game of the season to take our goal difference to -7 after two games.

-4 at the moment, but I think there's yet a chance for us to get into positive goal difference for the first time this season.

Did they. i know loads want everyone at times. But i didnt see that one myself
Yeah I know he said he maybe one to keep an eye on for the future, an up and coming manager andithers said that too, but I didn’t see anyone wanting him now. Despite their impending relegation, I think he still has a lot of potential but that’s all it is. Keeping a club like Ipswich in the PL when they were League One just two years ago was always going to be tough regardless of what they spent.

The thing is though, he spent a lot of money to keep them in the league and I can`t think of a single player, apart from Delap who he`s signed, that could be classed as a success.

He seemed to set them up to try and play nice football at the expense of defending, a bit like Kompany with Burnley last year, seemingly forgetting that the first year is just about staying in the league, then building on that, even if means playing ugly football.

Yep agree with all that. To be honest I don’t pay a lot of attention to them other than their results when they were relevant to us, but I just look at what he has done with them in two successive promotions and keeping themselves with a fighting chance. The jump from division to division gets greater the further up the chain a manager goes, and the jump from Championship to PL is by far the biggest one and that chasm is getting wider every year seemingly.

It’s a steep learning curve for a novice manager. One he’ll have to learn. Aside from this season his biggest test to date will be how his team reacts next season - we’ve seen what has happened with other relegated clubs, most notably and recently, Luton.

It’s a tough call, does a newly promoted team go full Allardyce / Dyche and grind out points or do they try to play footy and hope for the best ?

Especially if they have signed players in the lower leagues to suit a certain style and not the more industrial style football needed to get results in the PL

I think you have to play a blend of different styles to stay up , one which involves being defensively pragmatic, but not where you just sit back the entire time like dyche or you get overrun like we did, in fact our season alone shows you can't just be an old school tactical dinosaur anymore, have to incorporate some form of counter attacking football or something of substance along with the long balls and set pieces.

Might have already been answered but sure 94/5 was one such season.
