Just picked up some pounds for my trip home in January and they’ve included some £50 notes. Last time I was back nowhere would accept this denomination, so just wondering what options I have, will supermarket self serves accept them for example? Or can I take them into a bank and exchange them for smaller notes?

Some places will take them, but if you're passing a main post office they'll take them off your hands for smaller denomination notes.

Did they give you 'new' plasticy notes or the old paper ones? If it's the later ones they'll need to be exchanged at the post office anyway (unless you have a UK bank acc, banks don't seem too keen to help non-account holders these days)

It’s the new plastic ones with Alan Turing on. No UK bank account any more but will head to the post office if I can’t break them anywhere else, cheers.

A pint is about £48 these days, so you'll be laughing

They’ve always been a tricky thing to get rid of, bit like finding Scottish notes in your wallet. But with the way costs have risen in the past year, no establishment should have a problem with them now. e.g. was in my local the other day, 2 pints of lager and 2 glasses of wine……£24. Handing over a £50 for that shouldn’t be an issue.
