Scouse Republic - David Swift

I've heard some say he's leaning into hyperbole and contrarian cynicism in trying to provoke discussion around the darker eras of the city. As someone born and bred in the north east of England, I dare say we share a lot of similarities in many respects. Shipbuilding, poverty, immigration, large Irish and Chinese communities.

I think he's trying to poke at the nostalgic way we sometimes harm back...but I can absolutely understand why some would find it deliberately provocative.
I get that all groups of people have collective myths. There are plenty of factual examples that Liverpool isn’t a socialist utopia. My problem with the book is the snarky way it’s written. It’s very much the Reform/ alt right argument that the REAL working class all hate immigrants and cross picket lines.

The unpalatable truth for those who claim that Liverpool has been forever Labour.

Glasgow was Tory until the 1950s too because of the Orange vote.

Oddly pertinent, albeit incorrect and deeply flawed, when considering it through the lens of today's politics and the shift towards the populist right and the prevailing encouragement of that by the media.

There are many powerful people who'd love us all to be believe there isn't a class war, but instead it's those different fellas taking your jobs...

Absolutely see your point, mate.
