knowing your history

Player Valuation: £30m
Saw someone elsewhere say this was worst squad ever in terms of ability. It certainly is in terms of mentality but feel rest is OTT.

This was 11 for final two games of that season v Arsenal and Coventry:

Myhre

Carl Tiler
John O'Kane
Craig Short
Bilic
Ball
Dave Watson
Beagire
B***by
Hutchinson
Dunc

Not a clue what defence or midfield was put out in that one!

Madar and of course Farrelly were the only two changes from that for Coventry.

Better than this current shower? They did actually get to 38 points that season.

Probably not better in terms of ability, but the attitude and effort were there, which is really what we need right now. The right mentality can cover up quite a few technical failings, to the point where it can make a critical difference.

Oh, and it was actually 40 points that we got to - I remember thinking at the time that 40 seemed a high total for Bolton to be relegated with, but thankfully they let it 5 more goals than we did!

This team we have now ability wise is far above that imo, however they would have walked through walls and had heart... something which very few players in this squad can say they have.

More ability in the modern one maybe, but that other team has far more characters.
Imagine Keane and with big dunc, Watson, Short, bilic, Hutchinson for a corner, they would end up crying

Tiler, O'Kane, Short, Bilic, Ball, Watson, Hutchinson and Dunc walk into this side, 7 of the 8 would be captain if they were here now (Sorry John O'Kane) and even though I wasn't Myhres biggest fan, I'd have him over Pickford any day.

Madar was quality as well, much maligned, mostly because of the Derby miss, which was horrific tbf.

I dont know if my memory has changed anything but the team above seemed to have more spirit. Not as fragile. And a few of them really got stuck in.

I have virtualy no confidence in this lot today. I can almost predict how the game will go. The errors that will occur. And an almost guarenteed no clean sheet.

Don Hutchison had more steel than our current crop of midfielders. Slaven Billic was alright too.

Peter Beagrie wasn't in that team so don't know why you have mentioned him.

I love this argument and it’s one I feel I’ve been making quite a bit in recent weeks.

My first season watching Everton was 1997-98, first game that awful one versus Palace beat us and Lombardo terrorised us.

That 1997-98 side was far and away the worst Everton side I’ve ever seen, even now. Tiler, Thomsen, Farrelly, Ward, Bilic, Williamson, Barrett I could go on.

But what we had is we had some massive leaders and huge fight which ultimately got us out of it. Ferguson, Speed, Stuart, Southall, Watson and Barmby were all massive in the season (where they were available).

We were terrible, but yet we pulled off some huge results like beating Liverpool, Chelsea, Leeds, Blackburn at home, coming from 2-0 down to draw with Arsenal. The players had fight in them.

I compared the game last night to the Leicester game, in December 1997. We were bottom, terrible and out of sorts, went and grabbed a 1-0 90th minute penalty, then went on to beat Bolton, Palace and Chelsea, probably what kept us up in truth.

This side is just void of direction, leadership, someone who can make the others step up. Richarlison can’t do it on his own, and Gordon, being truthful is the only one who’s upping his game to get us out of it.

There were bad players like Spencer, Thomsen, but none of them were cowards, they tried but ultimately weren’t good enough.

These players are good enough they just don’t care. Keane, Calvert Lewin, Gomes… I can go on.

So yea 1997-98 was a worse side, but I’d give you anything to have them now.

Some decent players there but looks like 4 x CBs and 2 x FBs. Looks totally unbalanced. Maybe 3 or 4 players wouldn't get into this team but it looks better on paper

Think this is the main reason. I always wonder that the wages these players are on takes the motivation away. Not saying all but several of our players couldn't give a toss about our situation as long as they continue to pick up hefty life changing wages

I honestly just don't think many of them are good enough. At the very best a lot of our players are system players who can work in a certain set up, take them out of their comfort zone and they look like they have never kicked a ball before. Even our better players are deeply flawed.
