The Premier League has approved a rule change that will allow clubs to name a total of seven substitutes in a match beginning next season.
The decision was announced after a meeting on February 7, involving the 20 Premier League clubs.
The thinking behind the idea is to bring the league in line with other major competitions which also allow seven substitutes as opposed to the current Premier regulation allowing just five.
Despite the increase in numbers on the bench, the rule change will NOT allow more players to be changed during a match - meaning that there will be at least four unused subs in every game.
It was Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy who put the proposal forward.
He told Spurs’ official website: “"We have promoted and lobbied for this rule change for some time and we are absolutely delighted our proposal was supported by member clubs.
"It is important to give our managers greater choice on the bench, enabling them to be more creative tactically.
"That was the objective behind us bringing this proposal to the table.
"Additionally, it should also mean that younger players from the academy can be given an opportunity to break into the first team."
