Well, it’s arrived. First game of our last ever season at the Grand Old Lady. The start of the end so to speak.
With the curtains being drawn in May we’ll witness the good, the bad and the ugly over the next nine months and quite frankly we should savour every single second. Against a backdrop of calamitous mis-management that has potentially threatened our very existence, an ongoing battle against what seems like a targeted vendetta by the EPL and Richard Masters and an almost comedic sale of the Club there is one hugely important constant....the fans.
We know our role, we know what we need to do and we know how our unique support can inspire what is in truth a largely mediocre team. We have likely around 20-22 home games left taking potential home cup ties into account so let’s make every minute a ‘Goodison Minute’.
Like many long-serving STH’s and regular walk-ups I’ve witnessed virtually everything football can throw at you when inside those hallowed turnstiles and I wouldn’t change a single second of it. I’ve come out of there euphoric, traumatised, depressed, mystified, encouraged, desolate, confused, enthused and bouncing with adrenaline and seen performances from the banal to the ridiculous and to the incredible. Think back over the 100’s and 100’s of games you’ve attended inside the Grand Old Lady and the noises, smells and emotions you’ve felt.....it won’t ever be repeated anywhere ever. Goodison is a sacred place and it’s played a huge part in my life, every Toffee’s life and the life of football in this country. Like many I’ve built a fantastic friendship group over the years all brought together by our passion for Everton and our magnetic draw to the place we call ‘home’....a group of all ages from 16 to over 70 and all with different opinions and views on players, managers, playing style, the opposition and even the foot-long hotdogs and the warm Chang. Embrace every last drop of what Goodison offers and give her a season-long send-off like no other.
It’s going to be an emotional ride and that final game against Southampton really isn’t that far away. Then it’s the start of a new era at Bradley Moore Dock and my one hope is that Dan Meis and his team truly have designed a stadium that will help us reach new heights and most importantly kept all that is great and unique about Goodison Park.
Would be great to have this thread as a last-season tribute to the Old Lady with pictures, stories and anything whatsoever anecdotal about our match day experiences for 24/25.
Well, here we go, buckle in and enjoy the ride. See you about 2.15pm Old Girl.
