Reidy's Bottle Of Grecian

The Unobstructed View
From home to Ellesmere (Shropshire) and back via A49 on the way and Wrexham on the return.

Travelling down the A49 at a leisurely pace on a sunday is like a step back in time, meandering through the patchwork quilt that is Cheshire, along what at times is just a country lane, interspersed with quaint cottages and thatched roofs.
It felt like Heartbeat at times as M.G. BGT'S, TR4'S, E-TYPE JAGS, and other classic British vehicles worked their way along their route (pron. root), all out for their sunday stroll.

The journey began with a short flit along the M6, crossing the behemoth that is the Thelwall viaduct, 8 lanes of motorway that regularly carry in excess of 160,00 vehicles a day.

then after a quick sprint on the m56 it's onto the a49.
you cant really rush on the a49 as it's a single carriageway and there are plenty of unmarked police cars to lighten your wallet should you be in too much of a rush.

who's rushing anyway as you pass through Whitley (OF GREENALL WHITLEY),Vale Royal, cross the River Weaver en route to Cuddington, ignoring the signs for Brassey Green as you head on past Beeston Castle carrying on your journey you will also catch a glimpse of Cholmondeley Castle as well before the temptation to visit the wonderfully named Bell o'th Hill cr nearby Agden Hall.

as you divert around Whitchurch, you head along the A495 and soon realise you are in border country when you start seeing welsh writing on the roads, it's on through Welshampton before arriving at the quaint lakeside (ok, ok i know, it's not a lake it's a mere) encampment of Ellesmere.

for the journey home i headed towards Wrexham, through Overton, a place where the petrol station on the main st carried on it's sign outside the price of petrol (per litre) diesel (per litre) & milk (per litre), never seen that before in my life. then it's back on the motorway and dual carriageway network, shooting past Wrexham on the a483 before joining the a55 in ghost country (hawarden), i'll be honest i put my foot down then as i used to drive this part of the route everyday and find it sends me to sleep if i meander along.

so a nice leisurely drive on a sunday to pick up my kinfolk and home for lunch before heading off to the game.

btw i went the a49 way cos tomtom told me too as fastest route, yet sent me back the other way as fastest route, the return was quicker but i'd take the a49 for pure leisure and nostalgia as vehicles from an age gone-by join you on your travels.

it's a wonderfull part of the world that we live in here, yet we often ignore whats right on our own doorstep, a journey down the a49 will take you past houses that have been standing for longer than some nations have existed.
GET OUT THERE AND SEE IT FFS.

next week, mine to the co-op past the church & medieval stocks

Nowt wrong with Hawarden! Seemingly boring but full of talented individuals, namely 60% of Severenth!

Its no wonder these Arabs can buy Lescott when Reids is doing a tour of the North West to get the game.

i'm runnin on propane here .
4.0 ltr and 40-45 mpg, full leather (the comfiest seats ever), air-con on, stez turned up with multichanger on random, fantastic grip and not in a hurry apart from when coming back.

some of our foreign guests will appreciate seeing a bit of English countryside, they may even decide to rent a car if they are over for a game and go for a drive, they wont realise more than likely that picturesque England is so close to hand.

N.Z. was full on countryside, as soon as you got out of the city it was countryside and more countryside but more like scotland than England, with the old buildings along the way etc i found it far more appealing than over there and thought it was much nicer.

*orders driving gloves.

incorrect hayee, overton (approx) to the bypass and then about 5 miles on the 483, so i could do a review of 5 miles of concrete dual carriageway if thats what you want our visitors to have as an impression of wales......

the welsh leg of my journey was very noisy due to the concrete surface of the a483, i travelled at the speed limit due to overzealous police in unmarked cars who just cant wait to issue you with a speeding ticket for being an "english [Poor language removed]".

i went to Ruthin last week, if i'm bored later i could write up that route for you, and if anyone else is really bored then they could read it.
