Yes, it was an almost immediate link up with Mirallas who was had come on a few minutes before - real beauty of defence splitting pass.

Tbh that character trait is very common in wingers, the ones that don't have it (or develop past it) are very expensive. I'd love us to sign Deulofeu but one of the main parts of his game is running fast to the byline doing stepovers before realising he is running out of pitch and trying a late cross.

When it worked it was excellent but I imagine highly frustrating for his teamates.

I expect Deulofeu to develop past it, based on nothing more than a hunch. But you're right, it's almost ubiquitous. I don't think wingers learn from their mistakes like other players (probably a lot to do with their mistakes being more understandable/less costly) but it's frustrating that McGeady's been not learning from his mistakes for a decade.

It's why they're so watchable though. Anyone who doesn't like ball playing wingers who take a chance (which a lot of the time doesn't pay off for them) have lost their soul.

Yeah, but watching a man who wouldn't look out of place in a Gorbals lock-in running head down into a crowd of opposition defenders every time he gets the ball isn't exactly an edifying experience either, especially when you know the outcome is rarely successful.

I love flair players and am happy to excuse the inevitable failures of high-risk play. Just don't think McGeady's all that good. I'll make a concession, though: he's been putting some shifts in this season and right now I'd start him as a proper winger rather than try to shoehorn 'better' players into the positionless mess that we seem to be trying.

You're 100% correct on all that. The proportion of good to bad in an attacking sense is out of whack and needs to improve. As you say, though, he is preferable to some CM player filling in out wide. That position is a specialised job and you cant hand it on to those unfamiliar with it, because at the very least it'll leave your FB exposed at some point when the inevitable 'drift in' occurs.

Indeed - Barkley, Eto'o and Osman have all at some point been on the right side and it's no coincidence Coleman's been more conservative as a result. I don't think we'd need a heat map to see why.

100% convinced now, would prefer to never see this waste of space in a blue shirt again.
Convinced after that 45 minutes?

Why? He played his role well getting the right hand side working again with Coleman, doing his covering, stretching QPR and nearly scoring.

Unreal.

I beg to differ.

Slows everything down even further. No tricks in his bag and weak as piss.

Not my idea of a winger, but each to their own.
