2021/22 Alex Iwobi

West Ham schoolboy error asside, Iwobi has been noticeably one of our better players in the last few games playing more centrally, almost as a 10 at times. Makes perfect sense then that we'd sign Dele Alli in January for that role and never play him. Typical EFC transfer masterclass. But fair play to the "Nigerian Zidane" (I may have made that up), the position is his to make his own now.

I thought that one particular cross field tracking back run he made in the first half was to lift those around him, particularly Richarlison who wasn’t doing well defensively first half. Got the team and the fans going. Nice one, Alex, lad.

Playing with purpose and wants to play for the shirt. He's growing into the role as a 10 that does his defensive duties.

I've always liked him and thought he had great ability as a young player at Arsenal. I remember saying when we signed him that my main concern was that I don't think he or anyone else knew the correct place to play him.

I don't think we played him correctly and his confidence fell off a cliff. Saying that though his work rate was still generally superior to other options and he can be relied upon to maintain his defensive duties.

He hasn't cried off with injuries, he always trains well according to the staff and players and although he asked for a go playing centrally for Ancelotti this was a request he was entitled to make and he still doesn't complain wherever he asked to play.

Whether the sparks of improvement will be enough for him to really make it here only time will tell.

I hope he does as he's one of my favourite players. Or at least one of the ones I hate less.

I was saying something similar at the match; for me, he’s been one of our most consistent performers for the last few weeks.

Whether it's the new coaching team or the spectre of relegation, something has changed in his mindset recently, even after the west ham gaffe were he would normally wilt, he wobbled but recovered.
Bravery, encouraging others and celebrating wildly are new traits I didn't think he was capable of. We've all seen a lot of bad and frankly awful displays from himself but he appears to be rising to the challenge. Whatever has sparked the turn around I hope for the lads own sake he can maintain it.
