2023/24 Andre Gomes

There have been loads of examples of players who have thrived in some teams / systems and under certain managers and not others though. Look at Torres and Shevchenko bombing at Chelsea, Forlan at United, Beattie for us etc. We'll never know why certain managers failed to get a tune out of Gomes in previous years, but Dyche has already shown a knack for getting more consistently decent play out of players. Look at Mykolenko and Doucouré. Whether André can show the same is yet to be seen but you can't deny that was a strong performance especially from someone who has been out of action for so long.
Very good showing from him after five years of robbing the club blind.

I’ve had enough of being his mark.

If he had a hidden talent for playing a different position, I'm pretty sure it would have emerged over half a decade. It didn't, so I think it more likely there is no hidden talent. Gomes has talent, but he's not got what's needed between the ears. We know that after five years. Great he had a good game, hope he has more. We can't extend the contract of a player who has spectacularly failed for us, no more than we would Frank Lampard's.

Maybe Dyche proves me wrong. He'll deserve a lucrative contract extension on better terms if he does in this case, though.
We have a massive example in Doucoure. He has been complete revelation under Dyche. It's completely possible for sportsmen to click and find something later in their careers if the underlying talent is there. We are not in a position where we can be choosy.

Doucoure did not spend five years failing. We’re not in a position where we can write five years of evidence off as an aberration.

Some of our fans never learn.

so gomes can’t come good under dyche mate? or am i lost lol
I’ll be staggered if he does, Matty. I’m a Dyche fan, but the evidence of the last five years strongly suggests we will be making a huge mistake if we keep Gomes any longer than his contract demands.

Maybe Dyche can get some performances out of him before he departs, though. Should he extend his contract, he’s a brave man, because he’s giving more than his detractors a huge stick to beat him with when the highly probable happens.

He was pretty unpopular for a long period of time. Gomes on the other hand was excellent in his first season and most of us were delighted when we managed to sign him. I agree he has been a massive disappointment but it's possible we have been asking him to play in a position which is physically beyond him. He's a decent option at home or off the bench if nothing else.

I don‘t disagree. It’s the transfer extension calls that trigger me. I mean, no wonder we fail profit and sustainability rules.

He won't be getting a new contract, no chance.

What we could hope to get is a player with ability (He does have some) with a fire lit under him to play well and get a new club at the end of the season because if he doesn't take this chance now then he won't end up at a decent side.

Dyche seems very good at getting into players heads too so we need to use him like we should do with every other footballer as a commodity.

Dele would be in a similar position if he wasn't injured or had the contracted games thing hanging over him.

He’s always had ability… no question about that, otherwise he wouldnt have spent time at Barcalona, and we’ve seen glimpses of it during his time here.

The challenge for Dyche is to get a level of consistency out of him. I didn't see any of the Spurs game so I can’t comment on his performance, but if he can get a 7/10 performance out of him every week then he’ll be a very useful player for the second half of the season

I’ll remember many, many of Gomes poor games especially the first forty five minutes of that Crystal Palace 3-2 match when we stayed up, what a relief he was relieved of his duties at half time!

None of us really know what we are going to get from him performance wise. Hes played 12 months injury free in France and he must be doing something right in training for Dyche to throw him on yesterday when there were other options. It wouldn’t surprise me if he is on the bench the next couple of games particularly the city one but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him playing some minutes during Afcon. We’ve got a strong running team which could compliment his skill set. He’s not the quickest but he’s strong on the ball and can pick a pass. Every time this season we’ve looked like we have had a crisis Dyche has shuffled the pack and by en large has done pretty well.

He was sporadically very good in his first season. He wasn’t consistently excellent IMO
