In the US that gesture means nothing. Didn't Bush make that sign when he went to the UK or Australia without realizing it was offensive?

It's a historical gesture in Britain.

English and Welsh archers when fighting the French used to have those fingers cut off when captured to stop them being able to draw a longbow. (medieval period)
So when they saw the enemy or wished to provoke, they'd show them the two fingers

Its a rude gesture.

As if to say "eff off" or "haha I've still got my fingers", kind of an act of defiance. (*winston churchill "v for victory" sign was a play on it too)

So he's acting belligerent to the referee who's meant to be enforcing the rules in the match.

He's a bad bell. I used to (in excitement of the crowd) stick the V's up to the ref if I didn't like a decision. But I'm not paid £150k a week and I'm not on the pitch.......................

stopped that now anyway, by growing up!

I know what it means but I was just saying that it doesn't mean anything in the US. But I didn't know the history of it so thank you for that. (if that sounds sarcastic, i'm not trying to be)

Sorry that was just incase our other american friends didn't know this.

I'm so angry with the FA and not just because it is GBH (infuriated more because it is him tho) There parading all these 'respect' adverts on tele now during the half-time ad breaks.

Respect Campaign?? What respect? You trashed the very idea of that and made a mockery of it when you did not charge Stevie laa with misconduct. Bottled it quite simply. Maybe Fabio didn't want another one of his 'stars' portrayed in a nagative light again to add to Leather Face and that rat Cole. Proper bells the whole of em

It's unlikely he gave the ref a 2 finger salute.
He's not our favourite son, but I don't think he's that daft. Just looks like a good photo capture.

I would agree with you, if he didn't mouth f-off at the same time. He is that daft aswell
