BBC NEWS | World | Americas | Argentine man kills himself on TV

A former police chief in Argentina, wanted for alleged crimes against human rights, has shot himself dead in front of television cameras.
Mario Ferreyra was giving an interview on top of a water tank at his home in the northern province of Tucuman.
Police were coming to arrest him when he killed himself.
Mr Ferreyra was wearing his customary black shirt and cowboy hat and told the interviewer that he was innocent and had not committed any crimes.
He then told his wife, Maria, that he would love her forever, pulled a pistol from his boot and shot himself behind the ear.
'Pact of silence'
The Cronica television cameras were still rolling, transmitting live, as the distraught family gathered round.
Police, who had come to arrest Mr Ferreyra at his farm, came running, but it was too late. He was dead.
Mr Ferreyra was accused of kidnapping and torture during the military government that ran Argentina between 1976 and 1983.
The victims' families say the suicide was part of a pact of silence - that the ex-police chief would not testify against former colleagues accused of kidnapping and killing some of the tens of thousands of Argentines who died during a period that became known as the "Dirty war".

This is worse.

A 19-year-old man has committed suicide while broadcasting himself on Justin.tv, according to a report at NewTeeVee.

The teenager took an overdose of pills while on camera and was apparently encouraged to do so by commentators on Justin.tv and a bodybuilding site, according to the report.

Justin.tv enables users to broadcast video live to the Internet. NewTeeVee said it confirmed the man's death with the Broward County medical examiner's office, which is near Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. This will undoubtedly raise questions about the power of Web video and whether its voyeuristic nature can go too far.

The young man apparently posted threats of killing himself to Web message boards in the past, according to numerous online reports. Because of this many of those who watched the man's suicide were skeptical that it was a legitimate suicide attempt and began mocking him.

Some viewers did take him seriously and contacted the Broward County Sheriff's Department. It appears that deputies broke into the man's room and discovered his body.

In response to the tragedy, Michael Seibel, CEO of Justin.tv, issued this statement to CNET News:

"We regret that this has occurred and respect the privacy of the broadcaster and his family during this time. We have policies in place to discourage the distribution of distressing content and our community monitors the site accordingly. This content was flagged by our community, reviewed, and removed according to our Terms of Service."

i thought that was an awful story.

i hope the people who encouraged the poor lad to do it get prosecuted for 'assisting' the suicide.

i also expect a few copy cats attention seekers to now do the same aswell.

Problem is, if everybody who "encouraged" someone to commit suicide on the internet were prosecuted we would have to build a hell of a lot of new jails.

my way of looking at it is that family members watch there loved ones suffer with problems such as cancer etc. and in some cases they help in assisted suicides.
these people get prosecuted even though they are helping there loved ones end there suffering.

imo anyone who is evil enough to sneer and cheer a suicide isnt worth a piss.
they should be where that young lad is now..dead....if anyone should top themselves its them.

wether its jail , fines , or a naming and shaming in the media , they should be held accountable for there immoral actions.

That is certainly a point of view, maybe crank up the pressure on actual killers like the lads that kicked gary newlove to death, or sean mercer (the cowardly kunt! that shot and killer rhys jones) or the three baby p killers.

top down approach for me, lets execute the worst of the worst before condemning a few words on a website.

Come on, SR. You take offence at virtually anything. So it seems a bit odd that you would view the acts of morons goading someone into suicide as not worth condemning. I personally think anyone that does something like that is the scum of earth and should dealt with by the law.

From you that misquoted the 'boring boring [Poor language removed]'?

Yes morons goading someone into a suicide attempt is terrible and sickening, but is it not an element of nanny stateism? how can the internet be policed properly (and by whom?) when the powers that be still cant stop child pornography, and billion pound fraud? What next, execute the father of the child that used his dads laptop and posted something childish? someone is to blame... right?

Maybe crack down on the rapists and paedo's (amongst the many others) first and see if society takes notice of the new dawn of responsibility.

Nanny Stateism? You mean punishing people responsible for goading a man into ending his life would be the act of a nanny state? I don't see it like that at all. Stopping people from self-regarding harm is the act of the nanny state, not stopping harm to others.

It was more a point about at what point do we act and take responsibility for our own actions? The guy shot/hung/torched himself, took an overdose with vodka, whatever, no one sat him down put a gun to his head and made him do it, it was his of own volition.

That was my reference to nanny stateism.
