I wouldn't. So what if £10m is the new £5m? It's still an awful lot of dough for someone who's 32, been at a middling PL club but had an international swansong at a tournament finals where it was perhaps their only appearance both in the past and for the forseeable future so they punched well above their weight.

That Subotic has been touted at something like half that, and is 6-7 years Williams' junior. Probly a bit late on that score though.

Indeed. He's about as sure fire a win as you could ever look to buy. Just a bit short term.

That doesn't particularly bother me either if it in fact benefits our transition to a the higher echelons over the period.

We've had two years of our defence being ludicrously fragile - if someone had said £10m would have rectified it then most would have said yes.

Fair point. (Although I'd never have had gibson down as anywhere's near approaching the other's class - even though I follow what you're saying re: recapturing bygone form)

The point I was making is there has to be better VFM players around than Williams imo; and spending over the odds just to get him screams of panic.

No. Just no. For the 2nd reason above (Middling clubs) and he's a kopite.

We need a leader in defence and another in midfield....

Witsel could provide that as would williams.

If we got in 2 european superstars we would still need leaders from somewhere.

The only european star who may ne attainable and a true leader would be manolas from roma.

With williams we get a 7/10 consistent player and a leader....witsel a 7 or 8/10 player and a leader...

I did initially think Swansea are proper mental for turning down our bid, but given there are only ten days to the start of the season, I see their logic.

I'd still like us to sign him but not for much more than the £10m we've already bid.

i'm not disagreeing there are better players mate, but Williams is the type of defender who brings all the attributes our back line currently needs (organisation, strength, leadership etc.).

He wouldn't be a replacement for Stones, as when he goes we'll go for a bigger signing IMO, but he'd certainly improve us overall.

as many indications that it was in fact £8m we bid mate with add ons. So we'll see. May just be a case of amending the structure of the deal.

If not, and they turn down our next bid or we don't offer more, sure there'll be other targets, but didn't really expect to hear any more on this until later on anyway...
