A baboon was shot dead on Sunday when it escaped from Knowsley Safari Park in Merseyside.

"Spunky" an adult male, was chased off by a gang of angry renegade baboons for trying to fiddle with another monkey’s missus.

"The emergency baboon siren was sounded immediately, and within 2 hours, the highly trained marksmen down at Kirkby Police Department managed to take him down.

"It's very sad when something like this happens, but the police, gamekeeper and animal management team did everything they could to resolve the situation quickly, safely and humanely."
