Portuguese club Benfica have confirmed that Everton have made a formal offer to purchase their 50% stake in Portuguese prodigy Manuel Fernandes.
Reports from the Reuters news agency in Lisbon suggest that the Benfica chairman Luís Filipe Vieira and the board will now sit down and consider whether to accept the offer or whether to keep the player by purchasing the other 50% of his footballing rights - currently held by Media, Sports & Entertainment Investment Banking Group.
The transfer, even if accepted, is unlikely to be "simple", due to the companies involvement in the Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano scandal at West Ham United.
Fernandes has a contract with Benfica until 2011 and the purchase of his rights from Benfica is believed to be in the region of 9 million euros (roughly £6.1m).
It is believed Everton would then have to negotiate for the remaining 50% from Media, Sports & Entertainment Investment Banking Group to appease Premier League transfer rules.
