Best man speech

I’m best man for my mates wedding and have to do the speech in a few weeks time. Iv never done it before and I’m dreading it to be honest. I’m seeking the wisdom of the experienced minds of GoT to help me. I’m sure a quite a few on here have done it, and maybe able to offer advice.

What should I include in the speech?
Does it have to be funny?
Does and don’ts to say?
How long should it last for?

Any help would be appreciated.

In my experience don’t mention the STD the bride gave you

My best advice for you is be heartfelt and warm and everyone will love yer.If you can get an odd gag in fine.Stick to that and you will be fine. You will notice the stress levels fall by this method.I have been a Best Man at a few using this method. The ammount of people who will come to you after and praise you will leave you so proud of yourself. You might even get a nosh out of it.

This. No one is going to this wedding just to hear from you. Best you can hope for is that you don't upset anyone. If the wedding is at a venue then they may have an MC who has a template for a speech.

Otherwise, just be nice. Have it all written down. Say what a great mate the groom has been to you. How long you have known him. Happily talk about where you met. schools/workplaces/whatever you have been to together. It doesn't matter how mundane these details are, people will think it is wonderful. Give an example of a time he helped you and, maybe, a funny experience you have shared - nothing remotely dodgy. Make out what a great guy the groom is and how everyone obviously likes him. How lucky he is to have met his new bride and how much you wish them both a happy and long future together. Five minutes will do. Sit down to great (relieved) applause and enjoy the rest of the day ...

Do it before the nosebag.
Thank the mums n dad's.
Thank the bridesmaids, ushers.
Thank whoever conducted the service.
Wish the happy couple good luck.
Enjoy the meal .

Best one I’ve ever witnessed, was the best man doing a slide show, with commentary, using various photos of the groom from the time he was born, to right up to the marriage.

In all done in conjunction with the grooms family.

It was genius, upset no one and genuinely had the whole wedding party crying with laughter all the way through it.

Unlike my own best man experience, where I inferred all the way through the speech, that the groom wasn’t really sure of his sexuality, leading to his dad refusing to speak to me again and his sister threatening to have me kneecapped. ( she was from Birkenhead )

Funnily enough, the bride thought it was hilarious.
