Here is one that should get the arguments going, is it Fergusson, Stein, Paisley, Kendall, Shankley, Busby, Clough, Ramsay, Dario Gardi, Bobby Robson, Roly Howard at Marine, Wenger, there are so many but I am tempted towards either

1 Clough, who took so many clubs to greatness

or

2 Paisley, who had a record second to none in the 70's and 80's but he kept such a low personal profile.

Dario Gradi, retired at the end of last term after nearly 30 years at the same club producing a string of internationals, building an entire new ground and creating a talent system most prem clubs would die for, he should receive some sorted of recognition for a job so well done in a place that is not exactly trendy.

Roly Howard must also get a mention as he was the last of the Corinthian managers. He was a window cleaner, did Dagliesh's windows and somehow managed to play his team in a cup comp. Howard did the kit washing, line marking, net gathering, painting the ground and led the singing in the club bars. From Fergusson on downward all acknowledged his retirement from the game a couple of years back

Could I suggest we nominate five then have a vote?

In my lifetime, I would have to go with Ferguson. I guess saying Harry Catterick or Kendall would be classed as biased. Paisley is probably the one in history, maybe even Alf Ramsey. hard one this, will have to get back to you.

I'm with chico on this one (gulp!) - Shankly built a formidable machine (which Souness demolished, thankfully - so perhaps we should vote for him instead :)

Id go for Jock Stein the only manager to win a European cup with a team of players all from a twenty mile radius of the ground. As many titles as any of them and also a successfull international Manger he didnt break the mould he invented it and Ferguson Shankley said the same.

It seems you are all measuring your winner by trophies but I doubt whether SAF could have done what Gradi did at Crewe or what Roly Howard did at Marine. If you have the money, work for a big club, you can win trophies, try doing that at Hereford Utd.

Yes, Shankley did inspire the [Poor language removed] but spent most of his retirement at Belefield or GP. Paisley actually rebuilt Shankley's ailing side and took it forward to unprecedented success, more than SAF has done at OT.

who were forest? who was keane? where was the money?

clough for me, a real beligerant [Poor language removed] that did it in spite of the many that told him he couldnt.

driven, committed, honest, and down right brazen.

Can't accuse SAF of that monty, he won at aberdeen and at manure with no money and just those pesky kids.

look at the players he got for next to nothing, schmeichel, solskjaer, cantona and all the kids for free... nevilles, scholes, beckham.....

He gets my vote as well, took Forest from nowhere to two European Cup truimphs.
