Best vegetable?

Nebbiolo

Valuation: £108 million
For the more sophisticated here, and as opposition to the meat thread, what's the best vegetable?

It's a tough one, but I think I'll go for the leek. So versatile and wonderful if baked in olive oil.

Thought of spinach, mushrooms and sweet potatoes, I just feel leek has the edge.

Leek is a bit too welsh for me.

I'm a traditionalist and can't see much past a finely cooked cabbage. Not that 3 hours boiled stuff that gran used to do. A perfectly cooked savoy or spring cabbage in butter and olive oil, with plenty of salt and pepper. Tremendous.

Roast peppers and aubergines are also rather splendid.

And anything from my allotment.

Except salsify, which was rubbish.

English Asparagus. In season April - June. Lightly steam/boil toss in butter with salt and black pepper. The rest of the time, mushy peas.(y)

No contest whatsoever - the magically versatile potato.

Chips. Crisps. Mashed. Baked. Hash-browns. Gnocci. In stews/soups. Scalloped. Rosti. Shepard's Pie. etc.

And perhaps above all else - Vodka.

Vegetables are great actually. garden peas are heavenly. stuffed aubergines or peppers are incredible. But fried mushrooms are the best thing that can happen to a fully clothed adult

I always think mushrooms are like rubber.......I once when I was a lot younger , when on holiday thought all the squid rings on my plate were onion rings....Imagine my disgust!!!!

When we were growing up my dad grew vegetables in our garden, my sister and I used to pick peas just to snack on straight from the pod. As you say, heavenly.

Spring cabbage in butter (veg margarine for me) and olive oil. Wow, that's just lovely mate. I can imagine it now. Mmmm.

Swiss Asparagas is also wicked, especially the white stuff.

Mushy peas = food of the gods. End of.

Heh, love that list. Apart fron gnocci. It's just wrong.

I can, and I'm with you, mate.

I'm going to be highly, highly controversial and say tomato...
