Robert Kraft, who is probably one of the biggest and most successful sports owners in the US, talks about why he didn't buy Liverpool and his views on the finances of European football. Even if you don't agree with him, it's an interesting read about one way outsiders see the finances:

"I'd like to see a salary cap come to the English Premier League," Kraft said. "If it did, I'd buy a team in a minute. We think we know how to run a sports franchise, and if were playing by the same rules, then its not just about who has the most [money].

Kraft had a factory in Kirkby....

Tesco sell Kraft cheese......

Everton/Tesco/Kirkby......

It's all falling into place....

Bring in the salary cap and let's have him. (y)

i came across that article too, i find it funny that the owner of the New England Patriots is arguing that another league should be more competitive...

my translation of it, is that he doesn't view EPL teams as a safe investment. With NFL franchises, its safe and straight forward, he knows exactly how much he will have to pay in salaries seasons in advance because of salary caps, and because the majority of season tickets to football games are committed years in advance (if you want your grandkids to go to a green bay packers game, you should probably reserve them now) so income is less variable

basically, the NFL is more of a game than a business with respect to each team, all of the actual business is done on part of the league as a whole (which takes a much more active role than the FA)

so with the NFL, this guy doesn't have to worry about someone from the middle east buying a team and forcing him to spend more money just to stay competitive. even if his team does [Poor language removed], he doesn't have to worry about relegation which would lead to significantly lower future losses, instead he gets a high draft pick, can sign the next college hotshot who will sell countless jerseys and make him even more money.

so i think that the big 4 monopoly is as much of a problem as the next guy does, but as city have shown, money isn't everything. plus with so many good teams on the cusp of demolishing the sky 4, i think its only a matter of time and we just need to be patient, theres no reason to implement an impractical system just so American fat-cats can avoid taking any sort of risk with their money.

Interesting thing about one of the ways they keep things fair in the NFL.
If a Dallas Cowboys shirt is sold in Dallas the Cowboys get all the revenue from the shirt. However, if the shirt is sold outside Dallas the revenue from the shirt is divided equally between all the clubs. Obviously this rule applies to all NFL shirts sold in USA.

qustion is though....
  • would kraftwerk ?
  • does he have a model and is it looking good ?
  • would we take the transeurope express to euro glory ?
  • would we go on a tour de france or take the autobahnn ?
  • would our name be up in neon lights ?
  • or would we end up looking like showroom dummies ?
anyone who starts this "franchise" stuff has immediately made a rod for his back in my opinion.

I hear what you're saying, but that's the way the sports leagues work over here. :(

You don't worry about relegation, you worry about somebody snatching your team out of your town and dragging it across the country. Talk to Seattle basketball fans. Local gov'ts (and voters) get held hostage for stadium bond issues to help increase the revenue streams for the owners - for the "luxury boxes" - and if they don't choke up the dosh, then it's off to LA. Talk to an NFL fan from Minnesota or Jacksonville (that would be me, friend...). Sucks to be us right now. (n)
