If you just take a Raw image is it then possible to make the required images for a HDR ? or do you need to do the separate ones

The majority of HDR images are always too blown, over saturated and look unrealistic, they begin to look cartoonish.
I guess I just don't go for the cartoonish looking HDR. What Paul has done with his image seems, to me, to be what HDR is all about. Keeping an image clean, but getting the most out of the different exposures, and not going bat crazy with saturation.
